In what has become a regular occurrence, another version of Windows 7 has leaked to file-sharing sites. The latest version is reportedly Win 7 Release Candidate built 7100, which is slated for an official Microsoft launch in early May.

Some bloggers who've had a chance to examine the alleged bootleg of RC 7100 are convinced it's the real deal. Long Zheng of the istartedsomething blog believes the latest Win 7 code, accessible via your favorite "content hub" (P2P site), is real if unspectacular:

"The highly anticipated release candidate (RC) build of Windows 7 has been leaked and its authenticity is entirely undisputed. First looks reveal nothing significantly new or different, but if you've been wanting to get a vibe of how far Windows 7 has come since the public beta, especially performance, this is the build to get."

Lee Mathews of Download Squad has a similar take: RC 7100 is real, but not that thrilling: "Visually not much has changed, so don't expect to see anything Earth-shattering."

And Windows 7 News is displaying 50 screenshots of the alleged RC 7100. The site asked readers to comment if they've "spotted anything out of the ordinary like new features or changes." But thus far all indications are that RC 7100 doesn't bring dramatic changes, such as a rumored new interface.

If anything, it appears that RC 7100 is very close to the finished product. Microsoft hasn't announced a release date for Windows 7, although industry watchers expect it to ship later this year. Win 7's most prominent improvement will be a less-intrusive User Account Control, or UAC, a security feature designed to prevent rogue code from hijacking a PC. Microsoft recently that stated that Windows 7 users will see nearly a third fewer UAC prompts than Windows Vista users.

Microsoft recently that stated that Windows 7 users will see nearly a third fewer UAC prompts than Windows Vista users.

Nearly a third?

That was the #1 complaint about Vista and the the biggest target for Apple and its users. I would have thought that issue would have been handled better than just reducing the amount of errors by a small margin.

At the initial showing, they stated people in the audience, stated that "UAC" was changed to "Annoying"

Did you have to do a fresh install? I heard that you could not upgrade from the beta.

I just tried the upgrade, installed, and then after re-boot (final) it BSOD'd me 3x, so I went to advanced and selected repair and said it was in incompatible so I guess not, or summen's wrong with my compy.

BTW, WTF does free leech got to do with it, why do you need both versions anyway, I guess AIO would be good for all "7" editions this OS will have.

Freeleech on IPT is you can" hit and run " or leave to keep your ratio up . It should be in the top 10 later tomorrow so it helps your ratio if you need it .

You should never grab Win 7 from torrents...just grab from NG's..

There's shit on NG's too.

Anyways, I'm too lazy to go clickin' 'roun for another "RC" release. Takes forever to reinstall nvidia shyt + MCE schedule.

Someone come do it for me.

Oh wait...is there any difference between 7077 and the RC?

From what I'm reading at various sources, no, but it looks almost finished though..

A hot official copy of Windows 7 RC1 is on our desktop and we're poking around. But here are the three best new new things in Windows 7 Build 7100. This crazy background? Baked in.

Stream Your Library Over the Internet With Windows Media Player

http://img509.imageshack.us/img509/5720/windows7stream.jpg

This is hot—it'd be hotter if it was easier to set up. Windows Media Player's Remote Media Sharing will let you access your media library from anywhere over the internet. You need a Windows Live ID that you associate with your Windows 7 user account using a tool you have to download. (This could grow to include other "online identities," like Facebook I'm guessing, but I wouldn't hold your breath for your Gmail account.) You also need the same version of Windows Media Player running on both computers. After everything's all associamated, then your home library you wanna stream from should show up just like a local library under the "Other Libraries" section in the side navigation pane. Can't do this in iTunes, buddy.

Windows XP Mode

http://img509.imageshack.us/img509/4091/xpcompatbility.jpg

To encourage enterprise people to let loose and rock Windows 7, it runs a full-fledged Windows XP virtual environment using Microsoft's Virtual PC. It requires an additional download (booo), but you won't have to worry about your applications breaking like with Vista. Update: Paul Thurrott has more info and a huge walkthrough on XP Mode, including the crushing revelation it's gonna be free for Windows 7 Pro, Enterprise and Ultimate, not Home Premium, which is the version regular people are going to be running.

The Most Insane Default Backgrounds Ever

Look at these. Yes, these are just a handful of the ridiculously awesome backgrounds packed inside Windows 7. Some are the products of acid trips through a nightmare land of anime hell that I would never wish on anybody, and some are simply stunning. Just Wow..Okay, the backgrounds were in some of the builds between the Public Beta and the upcoming RC, but they weren't, you know, public.

Still waiting for an official rc

Remember that Microsoft page that said that a Windows 7 RC would be public available on May the 5th? Turns out it was dead on, as the Redmond-based company have written a blog post confirming it.

For those of you who are MSDN and TechNet subscribers, you can look forward to an April 30 release, but as mentioned, us mere mortals are stuck waiting a few extra days for it. The blog post also has some rather cool facts: at certain points during testing, bug reports and feedback were coming in every 15 seconds for a week flat. It goes to show that beta testers really do make a difference. They also state, "Many of your suggestions helped us refine the new and improved taskbar, the behavior of Aero Peek, Touch, Windows Media Player, and much more."

It's good that we finally have an official release date; now all that's left is to play the waiting game.

Windows 7's Unfixable Glitch

Researchers claim new operating system's boot up sequence is flawed and completely unfixable.

This week the world's leading cybersecurity professionals gathered in Dubai at the Hack In The Box Security Conference to discuss the state of the industry, identify new threats, share pro-tips, and play Dungeons and Dragons. Ok, probably not that last part, but you get the point; high-nerdery was clearly afoot at the Sheraton Dubai Creek. One of the more prominent topics of discussion was Microsoft's latest operating system, Windows 7. While a number of exploits and potential vulnerabilities of the system were discussed at the conference, one identified loophole in the system has security professionals troubled…and morbidly fascinated.

A team of researchers located an exploit within the new operating system that can allow hackers to take control of a user's machine during the startup process. The problem was identified by Vipin Kumar and Nitin Kumar, who created a program called VBootKit 2.0 that exploits the weakness and allows a hacker to bypass the machine's hard drive entirely, making it nearly impossible to detect. Once hackers can implement the software, they can then change access permissions, passwords, and gain access to a user's sensitive information. What's worse, a program like the one created by Vipin and Nitin Kumar can be as small as 3KBs, and thus can be spread rapidly. Naturally, problems like these are common during the pre-release beta stages, but Vipin and Nitin Kumar claim that this vulnerability is unique and completely unfixable.

"There's no fix for this. It cannot be fixed," said Vipin during his presentation in Dubai. "It's a design problem."

Microsoft has yet to comment on the exploit or formally acknowledge its existence, however, if Vipin and Nitin's claims are true, it could mean serious trouble for the forthcoming operating system's sales.
