Man Bites Dog.

It's Belgian but in French.

Not too sure your missus would like it, though. Cos it's proper sick.

Very clever movie, but.

Edit:
A camera crew follows a serial killer/thief around as he exercises his craft. He expounds on art, music, nature, society, and life as he offs mailmen, pensioners, and random people. Slowly he begins involving the camera crew in his activities, and they begin wondering if what they're doing is such a good idea, particularly when the killer kills a rival and the rival's brother sends a threatening letter.

nice Chalice very smooth

A little old but Le retour de Martin Guerre

French -Canadian movies(not too many good old fashioned romantic ones La Belle Provence tend to like social commentary or sax and violins ) -
For a true appreciation of Quebec cinema first and foremost anything by Denys Arcand (Les Invasions Barbares -won best foreign language film Oscar. Amour et Restes Humains,Jésus de Montréal),
Arcand is kind of like the Quebecois version of Steven Soderbergh(when Soderbergh was still any good that is).

C.R.A.Z.Y. probably the best recent francophone movie .I defy anyone not to like this movie. It's both funny and touching with a killer soundtrack .

Un Zoo la Nuit is great but not really something I'd take the wife to.The director Léo Lauzon is also another major talent.

Bon Cop, Bad Cop is a really fun movie and I think the most successful French Canadian movie ever.

i'd say watchable... a nice film but definitely not a masterpiece.
soundtrack is quite good though, especially the main song of Patsy Cline.

What can I tell you ? I liked the essential humanity of the film.It doesn't mean that anyone would feel the same.

Honestly though I consider myself bilingual , I'm neither fluent nor French . Therefore I'm probably not the best to judge any movie where any subtlety is required (therefore no doubt my preference for ones with broader strokes).

btw, if you enjoyed La Haine, you should like Ma 6-T va crack-er and Wesh wesh, qu'est-ce qui se passe? (suburbs, riots etc...).
Karagarga has both of them:

Beautiful soundtrack too.

it's on Karagarga.

on a different note, i highly recommend you a 'histrionic' comedy: Rien sur Robert (Nothing on Robert) - this scene is particularly delicious:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L7mFTz9EfTU

A genuine comedy of manners and mores with razor sharp timing and a troupe of actors, including the inimitable Michele Piccoli, who can convey a vast range of feelings with the slightest nuances of gesture or tone. The story of a French critic most famous for reviewing a film he never saw and the ups and downs of his love life is especially delicious if you are familiar with the hothouse atmosphere of French intellectual life. But the French gift for portraying the childish emotions that beset adult activities makes this film enjoyable for a wide audience.

Forgot about this gem
Léolo
Story of Léo Lauzon, a young boy living with his dysfunctional family. He uses his active fantasy life to escape the reality of his life.
After deciding that his mother was impregnated by an Italian tomato, he rechristens himself Léolo,
and begins to have sexual fantasies about his neighbour Bianca.
