1. type "about:config" into the address bar and hit return. scroll
down(or ctrl+f) and look for the following entries

network.http.pipelining
network.http.proxy.pipelining
network.http.pipelining.maxrequests

normally the browser will make one request to a web page at a time.
when you enable pipelining it will make several at once, which really
speeds up page loading.

2. alter the entries as follows

set "network.http.pipelining" to "true"

set "network.http.proxy.pipelining" to "true"

set "network.http.pipelining.maxrequests" to some number like 30. this
means it will make 30 requests at once.

3. lastly right-click anywhere and select new-> integer.
name it "nglayout.initialpaint.delay" and set its value to "0".
this value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it recieves.

if you're using a broadband connection you'll load pages 2-30 times faster now.

i tried it and it worked.
Its also working with "netscape" :)

your turn!

Or you could just get the FasterFox plugin and do the same thing automatically.

No way, Opera still smokes FF...even though FF is my browser of choice, Faster fox screws more up then it helps.

Thanks all for your input. First off I do have ESET Smart Security 4 and I checked the settings that you said to. Problem is ESET is very vague on whether a check mark means excluded or not. I think it is.

Also I checked on those settings in about:config and everything was already tweaked except for "network.http.pipelining.maxrequests" Sorry to disagree with you on that but from everything I have read, it does no good to set the value above 8, although I imagine there would be a lot of people who dissagree with that.

Also I throttled back on uTorrent, the maximum number of connections to 100, the number of connected peers to 50 (though that might be too low, I don't know) the number of upload slots per torrent to 5 and the maximum upload rate to 20 kB/s. This has all helped quite a bit

I also had a tech friend of mine suggest that I look on the uTorrent site for a fix to the problem. He told me that, when this happens again, open Task Manager and check the Networking stats. That if there is any bandwidth being used after you shut down the bittorrent client and you don't have the browser open then that means the users from the bittorrent haven't been disconnected.

He suggests instead of rebooting to open a command window and use the ipconfig release/renew command to reset and reconnect your ip connection. That will disconnect any torrent users still connected. I tried that and ipconfig /release worked but ipconfig /renew drew an error.

He also said that I could even write a small script to automatically release and renew your ip connection, though that is a little byond my capabilities.

You should read the site below, it has info on pipelining. a) Setting it to 30 makes no sense because the max firefox can do is 8. b) nglayout.initialpaint.delay doesn't help you download pages faster. :P

Read http://egonitron.com/2007/05/25/the-truth-about-the-firefox-pipelining-trick/ before you enable pipelining. Though the site says to put 8, that is probably overkill. Remember you are just downloading web pages and not big files. 3 Would probably be a more sensible choice.

Also addons such as FasterFox should be banned, all they do is waste bandwidth. Think about it, if all people used FasterFox then many sites we have today would probably not exist due to being unable to cope with the high bandwidth.

Will it pass the drug test?

At any rate, it's not so much the browsing speed anymore...things are shifting more towards the start-up speed.

If you already have a broadband connection, making several requests at once isn't going to change a lot of things. After all, human reactions are only so fast, they have a limit. And keep in mind that most pages are bigger than 40 -50 kB.

Anyway, I'm currently using Chrome but I used to be an Opera fan, whilst also using Firefox on Linux. This open-source world gives us a lot of options.

anon pleas tell me good useful extensions for opera and any tweaks for it.

https://addons.opera.com/en/addons/extensions/details/notscripts/1.1.0/?display=en - JavaScript blocking, just like NoScript on Firefox.
https://addons.opera.com/en/addons/extensions/details/opera-adblock/0.52/?display=en - Extends the built-in ad blocker.
https://addons.opera.com/en/addons/extensions/details/fastesttube-youtube-video-downloader/1.5.4/?display=en - To download videos from YouTube right in the site.
https://addons.opera.com/en/addons/extensions/details/turn-off-the-lights/2.0.0-W/?display=en - Greatly reduces the brightness of any site, but I stopped using it because in pages that used Flash, it either didn't reduce the applets' brightness or made them disappear.
https://addons.opera.com/en/addons/extensions/details/ghostery/0.9.3/?display=en - Anti-tracking.
https://addons.opera.com/en/addons/extensions/details/popup-statusbar/0.5/?display=en - Chrome-style status bar, very nice for small screens.

Those are just some general addons, you can search for others you may like here (https://addons.opera.com/).

About tweaks, here are some of the ones I use.
Preferences -> Advanced -> Browsing -> Change the loading delay on the right to 3 or 5 seconds. Disable smooth scrolling.
Content -> I've disabled everything here. If you don't want to lose functionality you can just tick off the first two boxes.
History -> You can disable history here if you want, and setting the memory cache to a reasonable value will prevent the browser from using too much RAM.
Cookies -> pick "accept cookies only from the site I visit" to enhance security.
Network -> you can disable sending referrer information here to prevent sites from knowing where you've been before. This may break some, you can turn it back on pressing F12 and selecting it in the menu. Geolocation, you might also want to turn off.

Then you can go to opera:config, find these values, and set them all to 0.
Turbo Mode
Enable Usage Statistics
Show Network Speed Notification

Save, restart the browser afterwards and you're good to go.

Sure, that sort of stuff is popular.

But yes, Chrome sends too many requests to Google even if you have turned all the privacy-sensitive options off and don't use any of their services. I found it easier to blacklist all their domains using Acrylic DNS Proxy.
