View Full Version : RAM or CPU more important in a Seedbox?

Hey guys, I was just wondering whether it would be better to have more RAM installed(2GB > 4GB) on aDS2000 from server.lu or would it be better to get the next processor up? (Athlon 64 X2 4400+ >> Athlon 64 X2 4800+)

Just a bit of background to help you answer:
1. seedbox runs tf-b4rt with tornado/ transmission on ubuntu server 8.10 with MySQL and apache.
2. its shared, has a few users at once so quite a few transfers are occuring at once.
3. currently the number of total connections on the server is ~200
4. needs to be fast at uploading, its hard enough seeding at ScT!

SO I'm looking for a justified opinion as to whether upgrading the RAM or the CPU will yield better results? OR maybe the HDD will be the bottleneck?

(Please only post if you have something constructive to add to the discussion)

If your Net Speed (Mozilla) has a lot speed, the Box can be fast anyway :)

have more RAM installed(2GB > 4GB) on aDS2000 from server.lu)

they don't offer hardware upgrades.

RAM for sure!
i used to do some F@H on my seedbox and the CPU (2,36GHZ) was at 100% all the time and i could always get max speeds

Like on my seedbox,Mozilla is very slow, but the download/upload speeds are very great! :) Maybe the same at you.

RAM is most important for a seedbox i think .. coz if u have like 1 GB ram and 2 TB hdd .. and u put a 200 GB torrent for hash check .. man u r box is gonna piss u off .. so i would suggest a 4 GB RAM and 2 TB HDD would be great for a seedbox

lol 2TB is a bit much, it would cost too much for poor old me! 4gb: looking forward to it now... if only server.lu reply back on the ticket!

i would migrate to rtorrent+wtorrent.... and get at least 2 harddrivers in raid0!!!

2gb is enough on a correctly tuned linux os :P

thanks for the reply, the thing is i would have done that but im sharing with others and dont want to disrupt their service atm!

got any kind of links/info on how to tune the linux? i've tried to keep it as small as possible, did a ubuntu server command line only install, only installed anything if it was needed for tf and if it wasnt needed i uninstalled it. but if you do have a guide/info i would love to see it!
