Even with a repair installation or automated system recovery (asr) its still only going to put back on there what he had in the beginning. All other programs will still need to be reinstalled.

Sometimes its good to just start out with a freshly new installed o.s. in order to get rid of anything that was causing problems before. If a backup is made then it really shouldnt be that complicated or a problem.

It will replace any missing or corrupt windows files...and u dont neeed to reinstall all ya other programs..U obviously dont know to much about XP....The only thing is that u lose all ya service packs etc

We dont know exactly wot the problem is..right?

ok take this for example..your cars got a leaky exhaust...do u ditch it at the dump or try and repair it?...simple isnt it...

On the contrary, even though I use linux Im going to school for the mcse program. I have already passed the installing an configuring "xp" exam. The easiest out of the seven exams you have to pass to be mcse. What your talking about is a:

sfc /scannow-- that can be executed form the run command. It only replaces "system files" when in all actuality it could be a third party program or registry entry causing the problem. And replacing system files is not going to solve that.

so why not try it out and then youll see if it is a third party problem...if u just do the format youll never gonna know what the cause was are u?

I like to know what the problem is , so I can stop it from re-occuring and your never gonna find out the cause of it if u just format

It might not be a software problem, it might be a hardware one (possibly overheating or over-clocked(have you checked the BIOS of the motherboard to make sure that the CPU's speed is set at the correct speed?))

Try removing the cover from your case for an hour or two whilst your running the PC and see if that help's (if it's safe to do so, as if you've got any speaker's or over item's that could give off static then they could cause more problem's so make sure the PC's away from anything like that before doing it, and also make sure there's no kid's or animal's around that might be tempted to put their finger's/paw's inside the PC whilst it's on!!), if it does help and your PC keep's running past the 30 minute mark then it's more than likely a heating problem and you need more cooling for it.

If it's not that then you may just have a loose wire or card in there that need's removing and re-inserting to make sure it's securely slotted in properly.

And, if all else fail's then i'd say the same as everyone else, try doing a system repair and see if that help's and if it doesn't then go for a reformat to start fresh with a clean HD and system :-)

Cygnus-Y,

It might be interesting to know how old your current install is and what programs are running as your PC freezes.
Have you any sort of RAM monitor?
Could you be suffering from a horrible and ultimately fatal memory leak?

If poor memory management is your root problem ( and Kazaa/K-Lite are prone to memory leaks) then a format/install will not help.
