'Legally'? Arrrr, who are ye kiddin' me hearty! Only illegal stuff breaks hard drives, it just down- / uploads faster!

This said, try optimizing the cache settings of your bittorrent client. Do a search, there is a ton of material available on that.

Hard drives should be able to withstand years of constant read/write activity.
Stop buying cheap drives.

looks to me more of a controller's drivers problem than anything else.
are they SATA2 or IDE?
what's the mobo ?
what's the controller chipset ?

go to www.drivermax.com and install it. update all you can.

Depending on the error reported, it might also be a faulty PSU.
It could be blowing the drive completely, or not harming the drive at all but causing so many errors that it appears that the drive has failed.

dam, sounds like you guys now your shat.
the drive is definately screwed. I tried running some drive manipulation boot cds(but it was the hitachi cd's called D.F.T. forgot what that stood for)
I plan on trying other drive fixers:
spinrite
acronis disk director
diskeeper pro
dpsoft hdd regenerator
and some others I just want to try cause i had some valuable 411 on those HDDs :(

CABALO, it was PATA.. so its for a laptop
I'm sure it had something to do with the filesharing alot at once and crappy drive and possibly not optimal cache settings (like has been recommended to me)

thanks to all for the help!
