I have a ftp I set up on my computer and I have a cable modem that gets speed of 1mbps and my friend has a 56k modem and when he trys to download stuff off of my ftp he can only get speeds up to 7kbs. Is there any program or anything I can do to help him get better speeds?

No - he is already above the possible maximum.

How is that the maximum for him. If he has a 56k service shouldnt he be able to get around that speed.

No, your average speed on a 56k is 4.5-5kbs, if you are getting 7kbs then I would be very happy if I were you :)

Maybe if you get a download manager it can help you not much though like it was said before, he is already above the download average.

There is a misconception that a 56K modem will actually connect at 56K. Current U.S. Federal Communications Commission rules restrict downloads (when you receive data) to 53 K. Likewise, when you send data, modems reach a maximum speed of 33.6 K. As with any modem technology, actual speed depends on telephone line quality. Just remember, 56K is the fastest speed these modems are designed to reach, not their guaranteed speed.

Using an intel 56k it's hard to get above 36k, but I have now got a Conextant chipset and I connect at 50.1 every time :D

V90, cos V92 sucks

Hightly recomended :)

56K refers to kilobits per second. When downloading at 7 you are refering to kilobytes per second.

Since 8bits = 1 byte the maximum you should be able to download is 56÷8=7

So as you can see your friend is right on the mark for the speed he can achieve.
