Why do I always have to write the extension to an file if I want to rename it.

For example, I want to rename the Document.doc just to Document without the .doc but I can't. I get some unknown file.

Is there an option where you can dissable the writing down of extensions for any program??

Im on XP Pro v2002 SP1.

Cheers :)

No, no, on ME I do not need to write down an extension like .doc when renaming files.

For example: This is a Winzip file called Whatever
ME - Whatever <-- That's how I want it. Do NOT need to add .zip

XP - Whatever.zip - cannot write just Whatever <-- must add .zip

or Word Document Example
ME - Word no extension needed

XP - Word.doc All I want it to be is without the extension .doc or .zip etc.

Does anybody get's what I'm talikng about. Is this possible on XP??

Cheers :)

Go to TOOLS > FOLDER OPTION > VIEW then UNMARK file extensions for known types...

firefox

If you are using Windows XP then go to your Properties for Folder Options and then click on the View Tab, look under Hidden files and folders and place a check mark on Hide Extensions for known file types

For security reasons it's a really bad idea to hide file extensions.
For example, you might think you're clicking on a document when in fact it's an exe which turns out to be a virus.
