OK, here's a weird one...

One of my favorite features of Vista- and even more so, Win7, is the "Sleep" function.
It's been functioning fine until a few weeks ago when I installed the first "leaked" version of Win 7 RC1.

Now, every other time I put Sprocket to sleep, the screens go dark but the PC remains powered on and I have to perform a hard shut down.

I mean "every other time" quite literally too...she'll sleep perfectly once, then the next time, not.
Hard shutdown/restart...next time, sleep fine.
Repeat, ad infinitum.

Can't imagine what might cause such odd, but perfectly regular, behaviour.

I have an official MS RC1 and am considering a reinstall to see if the weirdness continues but until then, any suggestions or theories are welcome.

Is Sprocket's first name Harold.

HAL for short.

Sprocket, like Cher and Madonna, has no "first name"...she is simply Sprocket.

This happened to me before except i was running Vista x64 at the time. It turned out in my case that the power management option for my mouse was keeping it from sleeping, the box was checked next to allow the device to wake the computer. try unchecking those boxes in device manager for the mouse and possibly your keyboard.
(its funny how a mouse can keep a computer up too lol.....{cricket in background} is my mic on)

Thanks for the idea.
I had already unchecked the mouse and the network card (the most common culprit in sleep malfunctions)...the keyboard is what I use to rouse the PC from slumber, so it has to be allowed to wake the machine.
Besides, why would the keyboard misfire exactly every other time?

true that does make sense. but what about the usb root hub power settings?
and also the usb selective suspend setting in the power plans can cause this problem.

All true, but...
The settings for all these things have been consistent since I first started using the Win7 builds (lo, these many months ago), and sleep has worked flawlessly right up till the RC1 build install.
Sometime this week I hope to do a reinstall and see what happens.
