Can not seem to get any Critical Updates to install. Windows XP Pro reports that they have downloaded, but are "failing to install"

Any help please?

Install SP1 first, not SP1a, hack the OOBE timer, then do your updates. All will be fine then.

Windows update says I have already have SP1 installed. As regards OOBE timer, I have no idea what this is, and certainly wouldn't know how to hack it.
Explain please.

M8t. I am not getting any error number at all to give me a clue. I am only getting :- "Windows Update failed to install the downloaded updates" Try again!" which I have several times.

Kennyboy, you could try finding the install files it downloads and running them manually -- that might give you some more verbose error messages. Look for a 'WUtemp' folder for the install files it downloads.

Also, what version of Windows do you have? Home, Pro, Corp?

The oobe timer balam refers to relates to windows xp activation. It stands for Out Of Box Experience.

I've had the same problem a couple of times. Check that the update you are downloading is not listed in add/remove programs. If it is then uninstall it. Also, delete your wutemp folder before revisiting windows update. The updates should work fine now.

If SP1 installed then it'll be fine.

I've had similar probs with wu. Sometimes the updates were not listed in add/remove. But then I've searched my HDD thru Start-Search & there it was. Deleted it & redownloaded thru wu. Worked.

OK Folks. The story so far, although I am out of my depth a bit.

I am running legal copy XP Pro.

None of the updates I am trying to install are listed in Add/Remove.

Not sure how to run the install files manually, so...

So....going to delete the WU file that I have found, (which by the way appears to be empty) and try Windows Update again.
Also going to search for the updates in Start/Search and if I find them will delete them too.

Will report back as soon as I have done this.

Many many thanks for all your help people, and at least I have some hope of getting this sorted now.

Regrads to all.

I had a similar problem with XP home..(legit) and after 2 days on the phone to tech support(at an astronomical charge rate I may add)..we discovered Download Accelerator Plus 7 was causing some conflicts..so try uninstalling any download managers that u may have installed

Hi Guys.

Progress to date.

Deleted WU folder. Couldn't find any updates listed on the hard drive, so tried Windows Update again. All seem to have installed ok...BUT:-

Update Summary reports that the Internet Explorer 0.95m update 822925 FAILED to install.

Add/Remove programs lists it, so I am not sure if it is in or not. Windows update does not list it as needing to be installed, so can not understand why it reports as failed installation.
Should I uninstall this now and then reinstall? Am on an incredibly slow Dial-up in Thailand, so a major undertaking.......:)

Any Ideas please?
Apart from that, really grateful to have got this far, with all your help.

Yes mate, uninstall it then restart your comp. You can download the update and save to disc here. (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downloads/critical/822925/default.asp) :)

Edit. Don't worry about your slow connection, the patch is only a couple of mb's.

Get corp, I think no matter what key you use then, and I don't think any Corp keys are blacklisted.

I know they did the blocking thing with SP1, but i'm not aware of any problems with the updates and hotfixes.

kennyboy, if you still can't install this patch, be sure and let us know.

Me again.

Yes, think Corp might be a bit of a strain on the system here. Am downloading tonight at 49B/sec.....hahaha.is that bytes or Bits? Whatever, it is incredibly slow. Have waited about 50minutes for this page to load. Don't know why I bother really.!!

Anyway, Many thanks again. Can't get WU tonight. Just won't connect, so will uninstall the update and then in the morning early, will download again.

LTJ. Tried to open that link you kindly gave me, but it is hopeless tonight. Will try again tomorrow.

Will report back, and again, really appreciate everybodys time and help.

PS. Down to 21B/s now. Even ISDN looks good now.....hahaa.....I wish!

Hi Guys.

Well, EVENTUALLY managed to download the IE6 update, and WU reports that it installed ok. Only thing is that Add/Remove shows it, but doesn't list any size. Assume it is ok anyway. That means the last of the updates is now installed, and has only taken me about 3 weeks to install...hahaha.

The Internet here went down for 3 DAYS last week, due to a ...."broken cable"
What can you say! Anyway, many thanks for all the help. Really good to know that when someone is in trouble, that they can rely on good advice from this forum.

Again, many thanks to all.

Regards

Kenny.

 Wow, that is some amazingly slow net access you have there , kennyboy...

Now I've read this, I swear I will never cuss out my 56K modem for slow DLs ever again.

Glad you got it sorted Kenny. :) Don't worry about the size not being listed, that's normal.

kennyboy
09-30-2003, 02:50 AM
Yes, I too long for a "normal 56k connection, but it just isn't available here.

Just like to say that I do share my files, but let's face it, who would want to download anything from me at these speeds......hahaha...:)

Never mind, it's the thought that counts.

Regards

Kenny

I have disabled XP from updating. It runs much smoother without ne updates.
