Suggest a budget gaming build

Looking to build a new gaming rig for less than $1000 CAD.

Only thing I can reuse from the comp now is prolly my monitor, as my current HD is PATA, case is crap, and PSU is only 485W.

Please suggest: Mobo, CPU, Gfx card, Case, PSU (if 485W doesn't cut it), RAM. Also anything that I might be forgetting.

Thanks in advance, salvage anything that could be used from the rig in my sig.

Antec/Corsair PSU > 500W (>650W if you want to SLI) ~$40-90
AMD Phenom II X2 550 BE $100
Gigabyte GA-MA790X-UD4P Motherboard $110 (for unlocking to 4 cores and overclocking)
ATI Radeon HD 4850/4870/4890 (prices are now around 90/150/160)
RAM any is fine... just buy one compatible with MOBO

In addition, a 485 W processor should be fine unless its a really crappy brand. I had a fairly decent rig running on a 450w and my current one runs on a 550.

I prefer the Antec 300 over the 900, cause the 900's got the big windows and if anything lights up it'll give you a headache. The 300 is real sturdy and is cheap.

Last time I built one, it cost me about $2800 CAD. The motherboard was about $300 and I think the video card about $600.

I just grabbed a new motherboard and a new CPU. The CPU is the Intel Q9550 for $300CAD which I heard overclocks to 4Ghz or close to that on air cooling and I picked up the Asus P5Q Deluxe motherboard for $224CAD. I will install this on the weekend and reinstall my OS. But that alone is over $500 and normally you want to get the fastest video card you can afford for games and the video card could be the most expensive component on your system. It usually is for me.

Wow I didn't realize video cards are cheap now. Shit when I bought my 8800 GTX it was $700, I got it on sale for $600.

I just checked locally and the Radeon 4890 1GB card is $270 CAD and the GeForce GTX 280 $390CAD after rebate.

But for some reason all the GTX 295s are over $650

For me I'm building a Multimedia/Gaming PC been doing that for the last couple of month now.
just the motherboard to get now, I went the Ex58 i7 way.

I don't know about building complete good gaming system for under $1000 but this is what I got so far

- Asus P5Q Deluxe (I Kind of blew it since it is a crossfire board, not a SLI board and I don't like AMD/ATI) Oh well one card is good enough for now $224CAD
- Intel Q9550 ( I will overclock this sucker to 4Ghz at least) $300CAD
- Corsair TX650W Power Supply $70CAD (used)
- BFG GTX 280 OC (I will overclock it as far as it will go) $250CAD (Used)
- Prolima Megahalems CPU Cooler $88.50CAD
- About $100 in case fans and fans for the Heat Sink and the thermal paste and the Fan Controller.
- I'm keeping everything else from my current system. The Hard drives, DVD-RW drive, Case, Soundcard, RAM and Monitors.


Total: $1032.50 CAD

This is keeping components from my current system. However mine will be a pretty nice gaming system since I will overclock it a lot. I'm just waiting for my fans and CPU heat sink to arrive to put this together. I want to see how it compares to a i7 965 EE which costs $1200CAD just for the CPU.

After all the reading I have done. I would suggest this for you man.

Get a P5Q board, any of them. They are awesome for overclocking and some of them are cheap, get a Q9450 CPU. It overclcoks nicely as well. Some even hit 4Ghz. get a GTX 260 video card, buy it used if you can. You can get owesome prices, and of course overclock the crap out of it. Some overclock as high as the GTX 280s do. Get a decent PSU. Corsair 650W for example. It's kind of hard to get it cheap though. I bought mine used. RAM is cheap so get some really good RAM. 4GB should do. Cases well there are so many options. Get something for like $60-70 without PSU. Can you re-use your sound card? If not get a basic SB X-Fi card, I have some stupid expensive card "X-Fi Platinum Fatal1ty Champion Series" well it was expensive when I got it but it has a nice front pannel which lets me hook up my speakers through optical and it has optical in as well so i can hook up my Xbox 360 for example. I think it was like $270 when I got it. If you plan to do some serious overclocking, like you should then get an awesome CPU Heatsink and good cooling for your case.
