Never let it be said that Apple retail isn't successful: the Apple Store on Fifth Avenue in New York City did $440 million in sales in one year. The subterranean store, which can be identified from the street as a giant glass cube that is illuminated at night, opened during May of 2006 and has been open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year since.
If you think the $440 million figure isn't a lot for a single retail location, you're crazy. It turns out that Zara's store on Fifth Avenue, a popular and trendy clothing chain, does just $25 million a year in business. When compared to Apple's figures from last year, however, the $440 million only amounts to 1.3 percent of the company's $32.5 billion in sales.
For those of you wondering, the $440 million equates to 1,921,397 8GB iPod touches at today's prices, or 5,569,620 4GB iPod shuffles—enough for all the citizens of Chicago and Houston combined. Further, it equates to $1,205,479 a day, $50,228 an hour, $837 a minute, or $13.95 a second.
