hey y'all would appreciate anyone with a technical knowledge of how isps operate to take a look at two peerguardian forum threads listed below where peeps talk about gettin a lot of pg hits and scans from ntl isp ranges (most are ntl subscribers themselves but not all)

trying to resolve this ntl issue- essentially whether it's anti p2p (the isp scanning their customers) or not (trojans scannin the hell out of ppl etc)

also specifically how isps log their customer activity (is it done without the use of port scans etc)

any knowledge would be helpful

here be the links

I use NTL as my ISP, and I've never had any problems :) Not that I'm aware of, anyway.

Probably NTL newsgroups or something.

Without knowing what ports are being scanned, its hard to say...

Strangely its Universal Pictures that appear desperate to get connected to me ;)

Yeah mate, i have had exactly the same thing, like constantly beatin my firewall, plus tryin to scan every now an then. Someone on here said that they just send out "Packets" or sumthin, just to get information on things like how often u use it an things like that.
Not sure if its nethin to be concerned about. As long as you have youre firewall up they cany see nething newayz so no need to worry.

Do u by nechance have broadband ?

@Rat Faced- which universal ips? curious coz some of the pg entries are old and the arin database has since changed some entries

@$nax- i've heard of isps pinging to test service and also i've heard some firewalls misinterpret isp connections as alert udp packets- but the number of port scans is what is intriguing here (could be trojan who knows)

i'll post back with port numbers, frequencies, times in between etc

i'm not ntl myself and never been hit by them to my knowledge- i'm a us cable customer

trying to get to the bottom of it for the peerguardian database- ntl ranges are in there and one range was recently removed coz some legit users reported they were in the blocked range

any technical input would be welcome (i'll get back with the port info)

thanks,

ddd

Pretty much the same here.

Have you used Arin/ whois to find the exact location of the IP. The one that hits me is the NTL Management Centre, Crawley, also the NTL IP Block, Crawley.

dingdongding
10-02-2003, 07:37 PM
do the locations really matter? i know some ppl might have thought if it said ntl management centre that they automatically assumed it was the isp scanning them when in fact ntl management centre is listed on almost every ntl whois- at some part of the whois

i dunno i'm not an ntl subscriber

if anyone has other ips slamming them please post them

thanks,

As im in the UK, no "normal" fastrack user could hit me so hard or so fast from that IP, its almost impossible that they would "naturaly" connect to a supernode that i "naturally" connected to...........so i think its legitimately Universal.

Wonder what file they want?

I just use the pergardian database........and it was upto date, so that range is in there somewhere among the 672 ranges ;)

Sorry sounds like a Boogey Man (http://www.klboard.ath.cx/index.php?showtopic=57006) range.

no it doesn't look like a boogeyman range to me:

coz it's not in the current pg db list is why....

ok first the ip 67.124.133.116 is not in the current pg db list but by the description from rat faced:

Rejected: 67.124.133.116 - Universal Studios SBC067118065168020523

you can search the SBC067118065168020523 in the arin database which brings up a universal studios range (meaning at some point the entries were switched/changed whatever)

and notice the address on the whois from my earlier post:268 Bush St #5000
and the arin entry from SBC067118065168020523 is:

and also as rat faced pointed out anyone getting hit like that in pg means it's not a normal user- why? coz i've run the "tests" on it- if you try and dl from someone you're blocking or you're blocking someone from shring you there's no way the closed connections happen 5 times every second (in fact if you're blocking a legit user you may see them blocked 10 times in an hour depending upon how they're cycles are set and then there's trying to dl fake files when you have their ips block- you'll get a lot but not every second- more like a couple a minute....)

so now all i gotta do is find out whose address that really is (the 268 bush st one) and then it will make more sense

ok so back to ntl any thoughts?

ive long since deleted those logs that contain the flooding

but i assure you i can confirm the flooding, and that its coming from NTL also a LARGE amount coming from the APNIC and LAPNIC ranges.

and i dont mean a few hits, im talking anywhere from 100-2500 hits slammed in less than 30 sec.

its not sending packets and all that garbage and im pretty sure ost of you here are smart enough to know this.

if your an NTL user , that means nothing. if your not specifically blocking those ranges then your not going to see anything.

myself im a USA user and get hit alot.
i get hit when im not even downloading anything.

who ever it is they dont like being told No. and they have abused the flooding.
somehow someone needs to make them stop.
its gone on long enough.

Sorry guys, forum newbie here,
Reletivly computer literate, but nowhere to your standards, and not in this area (which I would label networking).

In the next 5 days, I was going to commit to a BroadBand contract with NTL, you couldn't tell me if I should reconsider, given the info above. Being a newbie in this area I don't understand the in's and out's of these messages being blocked.

I have no idea about NTL's policy re: p2p in general, however it appears they are beginning to be pro-active in enforcing their "policies"...... (These policies are similar with all ISP's, however are usually only given lipservice for legal reasons, not generally enforced unless needed)

I do know that they have helped mediaforce pro-actively recently, for example.......not just withdrawing the connection of the offending party, but helping in the arrest of same.

If this is their new order, then i expect BT Broadband to take off in NTL areas soon, or Telewest to buy them out (at last)...

Sorry, don't wanna post too much in this thread as I'm sure you's would rather keep it as technical as possible, as that is why is was posted but,...
I have to commit to ntl v.soon (special offer on at the min), and the above info is making me weary to choosing them. Problem is my line is an ntl line, and if I choose another provider it'll cost me a fortune in BT (_British_Telecom_) line rental. Basically, does it look like ntl could be a bad firm to be with?, people don't seem to be sure in the pg forum as to whether this is trojan scanning or anti p2p, and if it is anti p2p (against U.S users for some reason), chances are they would constantly scan their logs for illegal p2p use too for their own subscribers, no?
Thanks in advance, sorry for buttin' in, but as I say, have to commit soon or pay a wack more for a different line.
Cheers

IWishAnon2609,

All ISPs are "anti" p2p in theory.

The question is whether they are pro-active or reactive...........

If they are Pro-Active, then they will search out p2p users themselves. This is a bad business plan.....especially if you have competition.

NTL and Telewest are the biggest Cable companies in the UK, and its just a matter of which one gets out of debt first, which will decide which will take the other over....they already work closely on some things, preparing the way for the merger that will happen at some point.

My hope is that Telewest wins out; as basically.... NTL are crap, and rip you off. They have bandwidth limitations and there customer service sucks....added to this current worry.

BT are not angels by any stretch of the imagination. Their customer service also sucks....but they are re-active and always have been.

Read this (http://www.klboard.ath.cx/index.php?showtopic=72907) thread, to show that your not watertight with BT.....however, the difference between warning you (BT) and helping in an arrest (NTL), should help make your mind up.

There are other ISPs you can use, but i believe you need a BT line with them all, if your after a flat rate Internet Connection.....I may be wrong. Try looking at the other ISPs, there may be one that will let you connect via cable...

Hell, it MAY be possible to get Telewest as your ISP, the 2 cable networks are physically connected, not just financially.

I would go ahead and get NTL Broadband, but just ensure you have a firewall which will block them.

I am using the NTL 56k, and they hit my firewall al the tme, although it is slightly annoying, its better i see them being blocked than not. Just make sure you have a firewall, and bock thier IP's and you'll be fine.

Hey, i`ve had the same problem from the same ip range. I use norton personal firewall. I`ve used it to trace the the knock on my firewall. I thought it was starange, and i thought i was the only one. btw i live in detroit and have comcast cable. ( cust Name PPPox Pool-rback4sktno1 ) they have been busy. thought it was some hacker.

who knows... but doesn look to be anti p2p at all

the three ntl ranges in the pg database will be removed shortly- to keep some peeps happy i'll submit the individual ip flooders that ppl were being reported at the pg forum

(the three ranges are bocking over 50,000 ips so those need to be removed)

well first off PG = crap.

second im on ntl and have had no problems with them, for christ sake i run a bittorrent tracker/forum from my home pc so im using ntl as a provider for illegal sharing on a grand scale, i think even in the contract it says you cannot use your isp/home pc to publish a public website (only ones for testing) well my forum has 3,000 members so i would say that was pretty public.

I dont use any firewall either, havnt used one for 8 months now, not even the crappy windows XP one. and ive had no one knocking at my door or sending me letters, ive also never been hacked either so all this about ip ranges etc is a load of balls if you ask me.

as far ntl being a waste of money £35 for a 1meg connection with a £10 discount every month and no cap on downloads either, ppl will say 1 gig a day but ive been doing 4 times more than that (at least) for the past 8 months and again no letters etc. so the cap hasnt exctly took off. basically if NTL were that good/bad at tracking p2p users i would be the first to get caught by them, as i am literaly advertising the fact all over the net that i am doing it lol.

go for NTL, you wont get a better deal, and cable is a lot better than adsl imo.

there's more to pg than just the prog (most ppl i know import the ips into a personal firewall anyways)- the peerguardian database (anti p2p ranges) is an important effort- the peerguardian faq link in my signature even says that pg isn't your best bet for protection...

and yeah i never thought ntl was involved in anti p2p tracking- i started this thread to get some info to quiet down those who thought it was some conspiracy lol- but this issue has been resolved as far i'm concerned (the ntl ranges will be removed)

sbc yahoo dsl
use hardware router
day time up to 100 attempts/second
night time up to 200 attempts/seconds

half from within my isps range
other half varies
both use ports natural to trojans and other malicious software
first section does lots of port scans

disconnected my router once to update it and the activity light which should have gone off continued flashing as if i was still connected for the duration
