EVERY time I post on this forum I get attacked. Now I've been threatened with being banned for defending what I thought was a funny thread. I'm sorry but I was rofl while I was posting about Billy_Dean.

I've tried posting in World Events, and was immediately shot down in flames by the pseudo intellectuals that dominate there. Unless you have a double degree or an awfully thick skin, forget it! They don't want the opinion of us ordinary (yes, common, ilw) people.

Think about it and give the rest of us a chance.

Come back AussieSheila! :(

We are NOT pseudo-intellectuals-we just play them in the "World Events" section. B)

If you come back with the intent of familiarizing yourself with those who you feel dominate things there you will not be disappointed.

Things have been a bit...ah....toasty lately, but we've commenced a quelling/cooling action I think you will find soothing. :)

I agree Aussie Sheila....

It is extremely difficult to post in the World Events section without being pulled to pieces.

Everyone has an opinion and debate is a good thing, but not everyone can put their views as eloquently as some.

Be a bit kinder to the newbies and we'll all have fun!

The mods don't beat the users Sheila.... they leave that to us other members........many of us carry whacking sticks for that very purpose. http://www.piczonline.com/client/titey/stick.gif
 However, the mods can ban members for constantly violating forum rules (http://www.klboard.ath.cx/index.php?act=boardrules).
You might want to pay particular attention to #1 & #11 before you persist in whining about the mods' actions.

Sorry but i'm gonna have to flame you a little again, a terrorist is not anybody who you are frightened of, if you post that kind of stuff in probably the most serious area of the forum ie the world news and events section, then i'm surprised you didn't expect some blowback. Just like if you go into many of the other sections of the forum and postly seemingly ignorant and blindly opinionated stuff you're gonna be told in fairly short order that your talking out of your arse.

@AussieSheila-as a general rule, singleing people out is dangerous. Billy started a thread which would have undoubtably led to one user putting something hateful aimed specifically towards another user. While sometimes its unaviodable, as in this reply, its just not pc.

:) I don't constantly violate anybody's rules. I hardly post, and when I do I don't do it to upset anybody. I'm here for a good time. And where have I persistently whined? Tonight is the first time I've said anything.

ILW, I didn't read the whole thread before posting that night, I only read a couple of posts, so you were right in that instance. But I read the World Events topics and you guys just scare the crap outta me, it's rarely that I dare post in there and when I do I cringe, waiting for the assault.

What do you call that garbage you were going on with about Afghani women?

I was so looking forward to finding a flame warrior for you, I was sure I could.

Hey Sheila :)

I know what you mean about new starters on forums, for some reason or another, maybe because others have settled and got into a routine of knowing others...but they tend to not notice the new ones as much and give them a chance, but instead knock them back at any given chance...when really, they have just as much right to say what they want, just like others.

We all have our opinions, christ that's why we are here and we all have a right to say what we want, within reason of course. So, if we all had that opinion on it, why does this happen??

I personally wouldn't touch the World Events section, because many subjects on there could get pretty personal and that's when you get slandered. But as you said you were funny...it's a shame that text doesn't always come accross as funny as we think it is, either that or whoever is reading it, has a real crap sense of humour ;)

You carry on as you are Sheila, you go girl, you have just as much right as anyone..Give em all you got...I'm right behind ya. :D

I was arguing the question of how much right we have to interfere with other countries against their democratically or otherwise elected governments will. Ie whether we can justify ignoring their laws and social beliefs simply because we are more powerful or believe ourselves to be right.
The fact that the topic arose because of Afghanistanian women's lack of a right to education was left behind as i pointed out quite early on and I also made my belief that women have completely equal rights perfectly clear.

Surely the more experienced posters here could at least be a little patient with newcomers, isn't the point to encourage more people here so we're not listening to the same half dozen dominant personalities babble on?

I see this as a problem of perception.

Without attempting to speak for anyone else, I would say some of these types of complaints are due to a deficit in debate skills.

Although we are not as stodgy as some believe (the level of wit and humor on display is surpassing), we are attempting to seriously debate and discuss: We are not to be confused with a bunch of drunken louts in a pub-nothing against "pub" debates, but we generally try to operate on a higher plane than your average "barstool spat". We don't think the standard is too high.

Many who "drop in", who are not serious about discussing issues, throw out opinions and are not prepared to engage in the verbal gymnastics necessary to defend or justify what they say.

Many seem to approach the process (yes, it is a process) thinking they are prepared to debate, yet reveal themselves as "feelers of emotion" rather than willing to practice logic and reason, which are the only tools (other than facts) allowed on the field.

This is not to say other views are not welcome or relevant-many of our "disputes" would be stultifyingly (See? There I go again) dry and circular if not for the occasional injection of humanity.

I empathize with those who bemoan the length of some threads, and the difficulty of reading adequately so as to expound coherently, but that is a bit of a requirement.

Those of us who pose (yes, yes, it happens; it's happening now, in fact) as knowledgeable sorts put in our time reading, researching and exploring in order that we might opine in an in-depth fashion (though we dispute each other's preparedness constantly).

We do want others to partake, but would prefer that those who so choose invest a bit of their intellectual property when doing so-debate is not easy, and those who try to do it cheaply suffer for it, generally.

On a slightly different note, I will confess to being overly verbose and seemingly possessed of arrogant mien; I will admit to the first, but to those who take the time to get acquainted, I am kind of cuddly (or so I've been told).

To conclude:

Don't let your emotions ride herd on your brain; it doesn't make for good posting in "World Events". :)

@titey:I prefer to avoid that completely. :P

So I haven't been drunk for months :( , I think I'm in the clear, seeing as how the last time we actually managed to torch anything was years ago, and that was just a whole lotta grass.

There, it's out, I'm sober all the time :( (and it's horrible), if I actually slept too I'd be completely coherent.

I think VB's spring cleaning just removes those who have no posts anywhere. There's obviously other counters which add up posts in each forum, so I think he would be ok.

Anyway, he'd probably just come back as slacker or something.

I started reading this and thought I really must reply to this, that's the sort of thing which interests me.

As is my wont I read through all of the thread to get a feel for it and to ensure that I did not just repeat something which had already been discussed to death. Particularly as the thread is long already.

I now can't remember how it started. Can anyone rememind me.

Forgive the bad memory, I am 76 after all.

I and others post the way we choose to post. We use the language the way we choose to use the language. I for one sometimes like the nuances of different words. As some chap said earlier the varied colours of the language. The subtle undertones and conotations.

Other people choose to post their way by using things like gr8 or not bother about spelling or using a lot of smillies or whatever. That is a matter for them, they get the colour if a different way.

Is one better than the other, that is either meaningless or subjective. So let people enjoy themselves and post the way they want to. If we were all the same then it would be really boring.

If you don't like an area then you can either stay away from it, or PM a Mod about it. If you choose to deal with the matter yourself, no problem. Just don't be surprised if people react in the way that annoyed you in the first place.

Oh and if you say things like ...." just think about that".... you deserve everything you get.

LOL

See - if you are being ironic, which I know you are, what is there to be intimidated about.

On the slight chance that you are not - what is there to be intimidated about.

Now that is expressing two different things, with exactly the same words, it just depends on the inflection.

Very true JPaul, very well said and as you know I sort out my own probs but I will also stand by my friends as you very well know.

My friends are important to me and whatever they have done, for one of them to tell me they are afraid to post here is very sad.

We have all at some point been jumped on here for some reason and some of us think we can handle the barage of replies we get good/bad but some can and some can't.

Bottom line is, AussieSheila is a great girl, I know her well and she is a little brash at times but she is entitled to her views and sense of humor, if someone is offended then they should reply constructivly or pm her.

Something I have said on numerous occasions, I place loyalty very high on my list of desirable characteristics. Some of us live by it and we need people to cover our back, literally and figuratively.

That does not mean a blind thing, so if your mate is out of order you tell them. You do it in private and you discuss stuff. You don't do it in public.

Jonno

You and I have had our differences, which we sorted out and I like to think we enjoy each others company now. I certainly enjoy yours. We are very different types and I think that is what we like about each other. Like I said it would be boring if we were all the same.

And yes, if I think a friend is out of order I would and do tell them...........Privatly, I do not believe in public Chastisment.

And you also know I stand by my friends whether they are right or wrong if someone is giving them a hard time, I can't help it. that's just the way I am.

OK...that's what happens when I go to bed at a reasonable time! Looks like people so far have pretty much covered all points here....but there have been instances where members have been flamed for expressing an opinion. This is a public forum so that is inevitable. But opinions are subjective....and everyone is entitled to one. So allow them to have it.

You know what they say....opinions are like assholes...everyone's got one.. :P

I agree with the idea of sorting out problems by PM in principle, but there are occasions when keeping things public is not only desirable but sometimes absolutely necessary.

For instance, if something is done which upsets a mod, but is not specifically against the rules, we often see the mod closing a thread with little or no explanation, or even worse publicly castigating the member, often with the comment that the mod can be PMed if the member doesn't like the mods actions.

I personally see this is a form of cowardice, the mod is willing to use their powers publicly but does not wish to have the counter arguments in open view. If the mods reasons are sound, they will stand up to public scrutiny, if not they will fall.

Perhaps if they PMed the member who has offended them they would possibly avoid the need to close the thread in the first place, or if they really feel that the thread needs closing they could give a better explanation, thereby pre-empting the new thread that gets opened asking why the closure was necessary.

Edit: And possibly while giving a fuller explanation of their reasons, they might also have time to reflect whether the thread actually DOES need to be closed.

:) Good Morning JPaul, you didn't disappoint me, I just knew you'd be there when I woke up. ;)

Can I just say that I was publicly and unjustly, I believe, castigated on the forum, and I responded in the same way. If I'm going to be publicly whipped I think I'm entitled to publicly have my say.

I may only have 4 posts up, but I only post in the lounge, I've been around for longer than that, mostly simply having fun and meeting new people. I also like to read World Events and would have gone on doing so, until I felt like I could comment, except for being threatened with being banned last night.

I have to wonder how much of the reaction was caused by me saying I was Billy_Dean's friend? Thank you Billy and Jonno, Mouse, Jacks and Ella, and all my other friends that jumped to my defense, I'm not upset, just p*ssed off. B)

My question would be this: If you are a simple girl, why do you refer to GWB as a modern day Hitler? http://www.klboard.ath.cx/index.php?act=ST...ndpost&p=493723 (http://www.klboard.ath.cx/index.php?act=ST&f=41&t=60708&hl=&view=findpost&p=493723)

You must not be aware that what you post defines the response, not the fact that you wish everyone were nice to you, as per your sig.

When I started out, I ripped a huge hole in a MODs girlfriend and I was attacked by the forum. When I kicked back with a thoughtful and even handed reply the response was, "oh, I like you".

You must earn respect here, specious platitudes will quickly make you a victim, not a respected forum member.

JP fugley is a caricacture of JPaul. He is not to be taken seriously, in fact, the more ridiculous he is, the more he is trying to make you laugh.

But in order to understand this you must follow the forum or learn to understand that somethings are not as black and white as they appear. Abstract thought is a challenge for some.

Again. Bible boy should have consoled JP fugley for meandering from the path of God, but again he just doesn't get it. Learn to practice what you preach!

I went down in flames of unglory in the world event place, thanks to the efforts of Friend clocker, hobbes and ilw  , as hobbes said, I found the comments funny not insulting, its all in good fun, well until some people try to make it all personal.... you know who you are :P

But I gotta say you guys do need to lay off the big words, it takes half an hour just to understand what your saying.

He actually creates custom clocks, like an artist, not a repairman. His hours are as bizarre as his job and he is probably asleep right now.

Either that or he is at a strip club getting "lap dances".

There is one golden rule of mine when it comes to posting in forums.....................
Dont worry what others think about your post.
Simple as that........................Your free to express your opinions or just say googleygobblestine............If thats what you feel like doing.

I say what I feel like saying and I expect others to do the same.
That is the whole purpose of the net to me.
Dont sweat the small stuff......Do any of our opinions matter in the long term?
Hell no .................So blow off some steam and have a drink on me :D
