View Full Version : Kl Radio

Hiya,

today I had a little idea that could be a lot of fun for the KL Board users. What do you think about some sort of KL Radio where board users can stream their favorite music - yes that's right YOU could be the DJ for 1 hour and "moderate" your own show.

How it could work: I could setup a shoutcast server for KL Board users only and YOU can post what kind of show you want to make.

Some ideas would be:

- a group related show with background information about the group
- a genre show with different groups but one style
- a news show with YOUR favorite music and music news / suggestions
- an introduction show where you can introduce yourself (if you are a DJ?)
- an interactive greeting show where people can post greetings to this board and the moderator sends the greetings "ON AIR"

well I am sure that we would get a lot of interesting ideas.

Requirements:

- we have to find a weekday for YOUR show
- you need winamp / the DJ plugin and a microphone (since a show needs a cool moderator right ? :P )
- fast connection (128 upstream works fine)

Let me know what you think about this idea and if there are enough responses I might just setup a streaming server and the fun could start.

Greetings

Would this be like the EarthStation5 radio? But I thought UKMan already devised a scheme for a radio station to be created.

I know for a fact that JetAudio Plus has Shoutcast-compatible broadcasting intergrated, so JAP users may be able to contribute as well. Only real reason why I didn't start my own station off yet was because I've only got a couple of 320 albums so far (I know you can't really get above 128 and keep the bandwidth low, but those 320s are my collection as well ;) )

Yeah, I wouldn't mind doing part of this Darker - Just PM those who are interested the needed settings once you've set it up :)

A few of us (FC, UKMan, myself, etc.) had been doing this for a while, and we're trying to get a server together so that instead of having several separate stations streaming at different times, we could have one common station and take shifts running it (DJing so to speak).

I still love the idea, we used to have a blast with this. What software are you looking at using? We were using shoutcast previously, if you want to do some testing with it, let me know. I'll be offline for a few days, but when I get back on, I'd love to help set it up.

TheMusicMan
09-29-2003, 06:07 PM
Oh I didn't know that something like that was already going on :o

But maybe this is a bit different since my idea wasn't to have it constantly online (too much work involved) - I think something like once per week - let's say friday or saturday for a few hours would be something that brings the KL community a bit closer together ;)

If this interrupts your ideas etc I will just not do it since i respect your idea :)

Can someone pls decide who's running KLDB's Radio server?

I've been meaning to try out the JetCast Server broadcasting and I wouldn't mind knowing who to request some broadcasting time from ;)

We haven't been running them for a while :(

Well at least UKMan and myself haven't - we were each running an individual stream though. So when I went offline and UKMan came online, you had to actually switch to a different server to keep listening.

That's why I like Darker's idea of a central server, it's exactly what we were looking for before, but we couldn't find someone to host it.

I'm not sure if someone else has picked up the ball and run with it in the meantime? FC might know.

a kl radio would be great, the individual streams where good but you never knew when they were on.

a slot for regulars to play a bit of new music to their peers would be top notch.
maybe say weekends would be excellent. im sure we would get enough members to fill plenty of slots.

What were/are you using for your broadcast, Nikki?

Darker should be able to give settings to DJs using WinAmp & Shoutcast.

I can give the exact settings to anyone using JetAudio Plus (i.e. JetCast)

I think the best thing to get the settings would be to PM one of us though depending on what you're using.

Please guys, no WinAmp-Any other Music Player war - WA & JAP both work for the Radio, both receiving & broadcasting, so pls let it go.

I've been AFK for the past few minutes, which is why you haven't heard any drop in bit rate (Darker's hosting it but so far I have control of the broadcast :P). I'm changing it, but I need to halt the broadcast for a couple of minutes for the change.

I'm back :)

I had some problems - JetCast froze on me soon after I closed the broadcast needing an end-process-&-restart, and after that it didn't connect (must have been a rogue process still running, but I couldn't see it). I ended up restarting the computer :(

Either way, it's back up - The station is now set at 56kbps Stereo. There shouldn't be any buffer problems now. I'm not sure what Darker has planned, but I'm gonna let Meteora run til the end then probably try the next bit rate up (they're only about 8kbps between each rate). If you start getting any problems with the buffer, PM me or Darker ASAP :)

Well, it doesn't seem to be working for me

I like the idea, (been around for some time - FC, UKMan, NikkiD, Guitar-Slinger helpingout with audio) always have. I think NikkiD has the best idea in this thread thus far - creating a Radio Station and allowing different members have 'shifts' - this way we will get a wide variety of music.

I have been planning to broadcast my own station via ShoutCast, as soon as I decide on and purchase myself a new computer, but I think it would be much more fun if a server were available so we could go forward with some sort of 'official' K-Lite Discussion Board Station.

Let's keep the ideas coming, maybe the dream will become a reality.

Yes, I agree 100%

Please, if this becomes reality, do not let just anybody be the host / DJ.

A little research and reading in Musicworld should shed some light on who is and who is not a music connoisseur. If it is limited to just a few hours on the weekend, there should be no problem finding qualified members to assist.

Howdy folks :D
The Mods have allowed us to have a sticky here for those who have or are thinking of having SHOUTcast or any other Radio broadcasts.

Just write your Link, the time of sending and also content if possible - this sticky will allways be visible for all to see.
Try to keep the questions as little as possible so as not to clutter this thread up too much.

Suggestions for making this even better are of course welcome :)

Also, make reservations for local times:
GMT is the easiest to understand.
Scandinavia is GMT+1

Please make your times in respect of GMT

***************************************
Here is a small explanation of what you need and how to go about setting it up:

First off, SHOUTcast suggest using WinAmp as the player.
The 2 apps to broadcast you need are:

shoutcast server 1.9.2 windows.exe
shoutcast dsp 1.8.2b windows.exe

Both to be found here: SHOUTcast (http://www.shoutcast.com/download/)

The 2 files are the "Server" and "DJ" ones

Good documentation can be found here: Documentation (http://www.shoutcast.com/support/docs/)

To setup these two apps:

* First install both apps and make a shortcut to the desktop for the server part. This makes it easier to fire it up when needed. The DJ app is installed as a plugin for WinAmp.
* When you have WinAmp open - press ctrl + P to open up the configuration.
* Click on the "Plugins/DSP effect" tab.
* Mark the "Nullsoft SHOUTcast Source DSP v1.8.2b" line.
* This will open up another small window called "SHOUTcast source"

This is how you configure how to send.

Click on the "Output" tab
Open up the "Yellow Pages" tab
Make sure "Make this public" is marked.
Fill in your description - mine is UKMan's KLF Radio
URL = localhost
Genre - that is what type of stuff are you sending
AIM - n/a
ICQ - 0
IRC - #shoutcast

Now click on the "Connection" tab
adress = localhost
Port - 8000
Password - (dont touch that for now) its configured via the ini file.
Encoder - 1

Now click on the "Encoder" tab
Make sure MP3 Encoder is chosen
Set up your bitrate:
Try first anything from 96 - 128 kbps/44.100kHz Stereo

This is the bitrate you will be sending - it has nothing to do with the bitrates of your tracks!!

Now you can close the "Winamp Preferences" window behind. This should leave you with the WinAmp player and the SHOUTcast Source window.

Make sure your playlist is loaded in WinAmp

Fire up the server (from the shortcut on your desktop)
Start playing your playlist.

Then wait for about 5 minutes untill the SHOUTcast server recieves all your data and starts broadcasting.

The address for people to link to you is like this:

http://yp.shoutcast.com/directory/?s=your description

The SHOUTcast server takes about 2 - 5 minutes before your link is visible. so be patient.

Make sure you are sending data by looking at the "Main" tab on the SHOUTcast Source window.
Now you can minimize the server window and start enjoying your own broadcast.

Good luck and if you have any questions, just ask :)

Finally - shut down all other apps (SoulSeek/Kazaa and other mind bogglingly system resource hogs) - otherwise your listeners will have to "buffer" your broadcast - and that sux big time :(

Peace
UKMan

Too bad he is not around the forum any longer.....

It would be great to get this going again.

Ok one last post about that topic from me :)

1.) The general idea was that everybody is able to start a show - I know the internet since years and do business on net since years and what I found really annoying and disturbing was that all people attack the so called "newbies" or newcomers or whatever. After I did read yet another anti newbie post today I did look for something which could be fun - ALSO for newbies or people that want to give it a try.

2.) The idea was never to have a 24/7 program - it was simply an idea to "connect" the people together and to show that we (the users that know the internet a long time) give newcomers a chance.

I don't think that we need a new radio since we already have a lot of good stations such as di.fm and many others. The concept to allow every interested person to get 1 hour to show off what he / she can was the point of this discussion.

I did a mistake and i did not research if there is / was a similar idea since I as pretty sure that there wasnt one (related to let newcomers broadcast) and thats a thing that i would support from my own pocket since the Pro's can go to di.fm or other pro stations.

For me not the quality counts (at least it didnt with this idea) but connecting people and letting newcomers do what they think "rocks" was the plan. Not 24/7 but maybe for 4 - 5 h per week - each "DJ" for a hour or so.

I am really sorry that i did not research and I will do that in the future BEFORE I post anything since I have no plans to make people mad cause I am the newbie on this board (even if no internet newbie)

I think Darkers idea, is better. If we want 'qualified' DJ's then there are plenty of professional radio stations that we can listen to.

Nope the idea is to give a newcomer a chance and people can vote if they want him again or not :P

And no no talking about himself - a better idea would be to have topics like the ones that i posted before.

My personal point is that a newcomer will never have a chance to broadcast on a 1000 MBit line to show off what he can do.

If a pro wants to stream and he / she is really a pro then he / she can simply apply at a known station and they will love to give him / her "on air" time.

Why not draw it down the line?

Have respected members of KLF MusicWorld or similar have regular slots (if they want them), and then have a slot for those new to broadcasting (e.g. a full day for anyone who wants a shot at broadcasting). That way, both sides are happy - And if either aren't before shit hits a fan,it'd be obvious they're asking for far more than they should be getting <_<

If that launches, then it could be that done that anyone whose making waves in the "New Broadcasters" time slots (mainly by giving quality music often) could have their own regular slot if the board (or the "current slot-iers") suggest it. But that's just an idea :) The reality of it will be that either certain members (like - as a possibly - FC) will hog broadcast time or that there won't be enough people broadcasting so everyone gets a slot (Note that I've counted only near 10 or so who've expressed interest in it so far)

Only question is - Who should have regular slots of the station?

I think if Darker could get this set up for us, that would be great! I don't think it is anyones intention to belittle what Darker has tried to convey here. I commend him for the re-birth of the idea.

Sure, the topic has been discussed previously - but that's not important - what is important is that there is some genuine interest in the idea.

Let's get this straight - 'There is nothing new under the sun". i.e. Who cares if someone else has talked about this or any other topic before - the fact that there is now a possibility of some forward motion is a good thing.

If anyone feels the need to criticize, I just have this to say: STFU!http://www.klboard.ath.cx/style_images/1/icon12.gif We don't need it here.

Darker - whatever you can do to get this going will be appreciated by myself and many others.

Nope the idea is to give a newcomer a chance and people can vote if they want him again or not

Good idea. Members can be put on the air on a rotating sequence and others can vote - sounds like a good start. Sure, this will have to be ironed out as we go, but just getting it going is what we need.

Let's not have this die before it even has a chance at being born!

Darker has sorted out the settings, I've tested them fully and can say it works like a charm :D - AFAIK he's closed the Shoutcast server for now but it does work and should be available for anyone to use when he's back on :D

I agree with FC and Darker. Let everyone have a go, it's just a bit of fun. If I want to listen to professional music stations there are thousands of the bastards.

Can I suggest that there be a pinned poll about this. People who are interested in giving it a bash PM a mod. We can vote on who we want to hear broadcasting. Then the top few can be given a slot to entertain us.

We also need something to tell us when the broadcasts will be. That can be the first post in the poll thread. The mods can update us of the next broadcast date and times.

People who have a slot can re-apply if they want and if they are any good then they will get voted for again.

I really think this is something that we can all enjoy and please don't let the idea die.

For clarification there is no way that I would ever be interested in doing this. You chaps just don't appreciate Jim Reeves enough.

NP - Let's stop the bickering. Just for anyone else - Leave the cynicism and sceptism at the door and bring it in only after the station gets its first cock-up and not before.

As for FC's question, no Darker didn't add me as the first DJ - He needed a broadcaster to help test the settings and I was the only one around with the software to help set up a broadcast (That, and we both used MSN messaging to be able to talk directly :)). Technically, I was more an engineer than a driver :)

You want to be more inhumane.

Good point JPaul - My intention was to follow on from what you said; the more inhumane the treatment you threaten FC with, the more likely it is he'd stay :) It was meant to be half-hearted, but considering my previous comments I can see why you can see it that way (but it was an unrelated comment - I agreed to cease when FC said he would as well).

But that's enough explaining myself - Now it's time for the real reason I posted :D

Remember when I said that myself and Darker were testing settings? Below are the resulting settings (for now). Some must be used for broadcast (e.g. address) while others can be experimented with at your own expense (e.g. bit rate). The tests were done using JetCast (JetAudio's included broadcasting program), so WinAmp+ShoutCast users will probably have to emprovise at some stages.

=========================
STATION
(Current) Name - KLDB Radio
Homepage- http://www.klboard.ath.cx

TIME SCHEDULE
Irregular broadcasting station

FORMAT
Use MP3 as streaming format
Encoder - MP3 - MPEG Layer-3

Bitrate - 56kpbs Stereo (for now)
=====================
SERVER
Streaming Port - 8000
Max listeners - 50

Use external server
Any of the five servers can be used, but whichever you choose MUST be set at
Type - Shoutcast server

DIRECTORY SERVER

That should be enough to get a broadcast started :) Sorry the settings are in a messy state right now; it was either that or 6-7 screenshots. I'll neaten it up when I can :)

Yup that was the idea but after getting PM's like "f*** idea stealer" and "just sponsor the real makers a server" and so on I did decide to stop messing around with other's ideas and continue with my personal idea of a newcomer radio.

Since it is not really longer related to the KL Board I would suggest to let this topic die (no bumping etc) and everything will stay like it was before and maybe the old makers can just bring up their idea again and make it the KL Radio with pro DJs.

Anyway it was worth a try and sorry if it looks like i did steal the idea but I am still sure that I did not since I want to support newcomers and people that have fun with making radio & connecting people instead "I am a great DJ and I ant a slot to show what I can" cause I think there are enough stations which would love to give them a slot.

I am not against Pro's - I would give them slots too but in general I want to make it a project which is fun instead "which dj uses the best eq. and beats" :)

ANyway thanks for the huge feedback and remember - please let this topic die now since it was just an idea and there is no need to attack others / fight on the boards just because my stupid idea :)

Have a great day ;)

Hiya,

to make some things clear: Some people did PM me and think that it is still a good idea instead to have nothing right now. Some mods did also PM me and told me that the best idea would be a poll then all forum users can decide if we should go for it or not - that's why this is a poll now.

My answer was that i am willing to go for it as long as it is a fact that IF the people that made the general radio idea up come back then we will stop this and let them continue with their resources and concept.

Meaning: everything is up to you - if you want that we do it then vote for it - if not then vote for NO and it's fine too since it's only an idea :)

Greetings

Actually, if I was being honest - I was gonna try to do some interviews with people here and there, where I would record the interview and play it later on my show. It was kinda a "surprise" to reveal during the first show. and to premiere on the second (if there was one :P), but why the hell not do it now? :D

The first one I want to do is a mod from this board. Question is - Which of the mods are willing to show us what their voice sounds like? I was kinda thinking of NikkiD (seeing as she's already had a file of here voice heard before, curtosey of Ron), but it could be anyone's game who'd be willing to do this.
If you're one of the mods (or even better, the admin :D) and want to be the first guest of Illuminati Radio, PM me privately - We wouldn't want to give the surprise away, would we? ;)

In the meantime - What would you like to ask one of the mods? For now, PM me your suggestions (I'll do a proper topic on this if Darker allows it in the first place ;))

NOTE - All of the above is pending to Darker allows the show "Illuminati Radio" to start at all and whether a mod is willing to be interviewed.

As for our first guest, one of the Global Moderators has stepped forward to take part in an interview :D I would publicly congratulate them for being the first to step forward - But it wouldn't be a surprise then, would it? ;)

I'll wait for Darker to give us an update on the KL Radio before I give more details. In the meantime, feel free to send me the questions YOU want to ask our special guest. Ever wanted to ask any of the mods a question - Here's your chance. Just PM me your questions and your queries might just make it to the interview of Illuminati Radio.

In the meantime, feel free to send me the questions YOU want to ask our special guest. Ever wanted to ask any of the mods a question - Here's your chance. Just PM me your questions and your queries might just make it to the interview of Illuminati Radio.

How will we know what questions to ask if we don't know who the guest is for the purpose of surprise?

I mean, people would probably want to ask different questions to Nikki than they would [B][O][T].

And of course, this whole post was just a shameless *bump*. :)

Well then send me questions that you would want to ask Nikkid and those you'd like to ask [B][O][T]...or balamm...or Lamsey...or El_Jefe (wait, that's you  ;))

You're bound to ask the correct mod a question. The rest, well they'd be interesting in the interview ("So tell me, what is it like to be a 17-year-old hormone bomb?" ;) :D)

I cannot confirm or deny that this is a shameless BUMP :shifty:

So, Darker, how is it going? Have you already found your DJs or show-hosts?

Hi,

the idea is great - and it should be linked with sharing, means:
one of you guys who has a good great and FAST - It is important to handle
many listeners, more servers with same stream are welcome! - server
should install Shoutcast Server on his or her system. The Server
Adminstrator also should offer a schedule and everyone who want to send at a
certain time music or live shows should inform the Adminstrator :)

What I can imagine of Kazaa Lite K++ Users broadcasting with DSP Shoutcast Plugin for winamp?

- obviously, music!!!!
- live shows with news and/or informations
around the place the kazaa user who broadcasts live :)
Info about events close to him or her!
the most important thing: be opened - that is also why the admin
is not responsible for what each user broadcasts - everyone is responsible
for his or her own thoughts... that should be mentiones... on server
page...

:) One time I was on #klchat - now: #kchat although #klchat sounds better i think - I offered a stream called k-lite radio or so :) I got some few listeners :)
was nice :)

thanks anyway, david.

server should install Shoutcast Server on his or her system.

That's what we do :)

the most important thing: be opened - that is also why the admin
is not responsible for what each user broadcasts - everyone is responsible
for his or her own thoughts...

Shows will have topics like dating shows, greeting shows (users can submit their recorded greetings to an email address and the mod plays them) etc.

There will be some rules about DO and DON'T since the concept of "the admin is not responsible" doesn't work - meaning if something bad would happen then the admin is in troubles - that's a simple fact :)

The shows are moderated by the board users - the only difference is that the servers are pro servers meaning that it will not be a 10 listeners show.

Should the k-lite forum have a radio station, for EVERYONE to try out?

Yes, it's a great way for people to get to know each other and have fun. [ 40 ] [75.47%]

Yes, but if the creators of the old idea come up with a server and are ready to go then they can take over. [ 6 ] [11.32%]

No, I don't think it would work very well. [ 5 ] [9.43%]

No, I prefer to wait wait until the original creators come up with a server and a concept. [ 2 ] [3.77%] This is really a yes vote!

At the moment that's 46 for, 5 against and <s>two</s> three willing to wait forever.

Lamsey did a radio show one night. It was quite quality.

He played the wrong version of Parissiene Walkabout but other than that it was quality.

Hence the quite.
