The Riddle of the Missing Dollar

Three men decided to split the cost of a hotel room. The hotel manager gave them a price of $30.

The men split the bill evenly, each paying $10, and went to their room. However, the hotel manager realized that it was a Wednesday night, which meant the hotel had a special: rooms were only $25. He had overcharged them $5!

He called the bellboy, gave him five one-dollar bills and told him to return it to the men.

When the bellboy explained the situation to the men, they were so pleased at the honesty of the establishment that they promptly tipped the bellboy $2 of the $5 he had returned and each kept $1 for himself.

So each of the three men ended up paying $9 (their original $10, minus $1 back) totalling $27, plus $2 for the bellboy makes $29.

Yeah i remember this problem posted earlier in the year.

30 dollars to manager
5 dollars back
2 dollars to the bellboy
they get 3 dollars
Manager + bellboy = $27
Men = $3
27+3=30

They just mix up the words and it messes you up.

The Hotel got the unaccounted-for extra dollar, because $25 doesn't split into 3 evenly. They actually paid $8.33 each for the room, leaving 3 x $0.66 for the bellboy - $2.

Look at it this way, each man gives the hotel manager 10 singles, totaling 30 dollars.

He realizes that he has over charged as the rate is $25.

He keeps $25, handing a single bill to each man (25+3+28)

Oh dear, I have 2 more bills to give back, but there are 3 of you!

"Oh give them to the bellboy!" (28+2=30)

So each man paid $9dollars for the room and each man paid 66.7 cents in tips.

9+9+9=27

.67+.67+.67=3.0 (rounded the final penny down)

27+3.0=30

10 each = 30
mistake, 5 back
they each keep 1 dollar = 28 dollars...
tip bellboy 2 = 30

so basically in numbes its

- 30
+ 05
- 02

They paid 27, as in 25 for the room(s) 2 for the bellboy, they kept 3 dollars

Listen, I posted this earlier on.

They didn't pay $9 for the room.

They each paid $8.33 (Which is $25 - the cost of the room - divided by three) for the room.

Then they each paid the bellboy a $0.67 tip, taking their expenditure to $9 each.

$27 paid in total. The hotel gets $25, the bellboy gets $2.

Simple.
