Why did I trust in RapidShare...well, I no longer will. And who's to say any other centralized file sharing service won't go down the same path.

Torrenting FTW!

Ouch =/

Question though, who the hell do they think will actually pay for their premium service if no warez/people who download warez are allowed on there?

OH NO. Gulp. Has my account been hacked (phished)?

http://www.topstori.com/solution-rapidshare-account-hacked/16

I looked at the email header of this message, and it's from <mywallsc at khanika.ethii.com>.

If I've been phished, how the heck could that have happened? I'm careful with my RS usage, am never fooled by phishing emails, and mainly upload to rs, not download, tbh. What occasion could have allowed for me to enter my details to a phishing domain? I ONLY ever log into my RS account by folowing my firefox bookmark :S. Does JDownloader steal account info? (the only other possible scenario I could think of).

I have emailed RS to see if my account really has been terminated or not.

I feel sorry for you. Rapidshare service doesn't make sense without right to upload/download illegal content.

You've been phished. RS's whole service is based on warez, they aren't going to start terminating accounts for this.

Ask RS to get your account back. And for now, only download links that are wrapped in
[/code. That's why Warez-BB made it standard that you wrap your links in that code because you can easily see if it's a phish link or not.

always make sure you got that LOCK on ;)
and always check the url before going there...

You've definitely been phished and i'd advise you to change passwords of other important sites like paypal or facebook and if you can,do it on your pda or something.
Did you have the security lock on?

Hey funkin.

Yes I am certain I have been phished now. The fake email address confirms it. They recited back my account name and password fully correctly, they most definitely have access to my account until RS will give it back to me.

But I am honestly tryi
ng to work out WHAT phishing link I clicked on! I practically soley use warez-bb for the occasional software download, I've hardly used RS in the last month, and only mainly uploaded stuff.

But the reality is, I just MUST have clicked on a bad link.

This is fricken awful. I'm a massive RS uploader and now all my hundreds of GBs of files (unique music rips, not just mirrors of scene content) are wiped. :cry1:

Is my paypal account (what I use to pay for RS) in danger? I'm thinking not so, I'm assuming the control of the phisher only lies as far as the rs account.

Found this article on what to do if your account gets stolen:
http://www.stumblerz.com/how-to-get-rapidshare-account-back-if-scammed/

Black hats can embed password stealers to videos these days.Google on something they call istealer if you still have doubts as to how much they could may have on you.It could be nothing but its good to take precaution.
Try to google yourself a little too, emails, nicknames etcetc

Security lock...dang....I never thought of doing that. I never quite knew about the phishing problem.

In any case...I have the automatic download option ticked but I have firefox kill cookies and cache upon close, so sometimes I have to log in. THAT's what made it hard to differentiate it, I guess. But I hardly ever DL RS links from the site....

I really think I have been unfortunate!

Thanks for that link sez, that's extremely helpful <3

Shit happens. Just have RS get your account back, put the lock on, change your pass(with all your other accounts too), and just check out links before you download them.

Usually if it's a phish link, it will look something like http://thephishersaccount//thentheactualrapidsharelink.rar.

It will look something like that. And when phishers wrap that link in
[/code(I didn't notice this code wasn't showing up in my last post, I have to leave out the last ] to have it show), you'll be able to see that first part that redirects you to their phish account. If it's not wrapped in
[/code, it's easy to hide that part, and only the rs url is visible.

So for now if a link isn't wrapped in
[/code, click on the link(do not start the download though!) and it will you take to the RS page. Then look at the url at top. And if it looks like http://rapidshareblahblah.rar, then you should be fine.

Well RS support are great! They've restored my account within hours and now I'm using Security lock.

So what do RapidShare account phishers mainly do with the accounts that they've attacked? try to sell them or something? Or is there a darker motive like trying to access your paypal details etc?

And lastly....if you have Security lock on and you get phished, how can you know if you HAVE been phished if they can't do anything to your account or files? Is this what happens when you see people sharing phished rs accounts for others to freely use? (I've seen this on some forums - I know you have too, funkin ;)).

In this scenario people could end up seeing all your files and even your IP addresses in the log section (the "Redeemed RapidPoints" area)! People could be accessing your account for months without you even noticing (until you notice your download usage seems to be used up quicker than normal, and then you discover a whole lot IP addresses that are not yours in the log)!

This is a definite minus for RS!

Also, I see in the "Redeemed RapidPoints" section that my account was phished at least 3 months ago. Two lots of 100000 rapidpoints have been siphoned off by two IP adresses I don't know, to create two free premium accounts I have never known of. grr. And here I was, swearing to myself that I had uploaded more than I was earning rapidpoints for.

Wow, three months ago. That really sucks. I'm glad you got it back though and it's now locked.

And yeah, if the account is locked, I think all the phisher can do is only downloas from the account(kinda like J00k00 was doing ;)). So for now keep a close eye on your up/down amount, and your points. If you notice even the slightest change in any of those amounts then contact RS.

And again, just make sure to check out your links before starting the download. Sites like Warez-BB, tehParadox, and the like are great sites to download from since you must wrap your links in the
bbc. Sites that can be risky to download from are any that doesn't require you to put your links in that bbc code. A lot of phishers hit porn sites or apps site because of this.

Glad it all worked for you dvd.

I've certainly learnt a valuable lesson with RS...and will strive to educate those around me about the issue. My faith in RS was certainly shaken, not merely stirred. But despite it being all ok now, in light of what's happened in the past with RS (October last year) I still declare RS to only be useful and truly reliable (over a long period) for downloading *smaller* files. like software, maybe some flac from avaxhome, the odd xvid movie.. but for larger files like full blu-rays, trackers are truly unlimited *unlike* RS. And completely free, if you have a good enough home connection :)...

Thanks for the advice funkin'. And see ya round :).

Not really. Ever have the problem where a less popular torrent only has say 1 seeder? or say the seeders are slow. Onsite hosting does not have this issue. Not to mention the lack of needing to seed back [though I never have that problem.]

Also, its easier to do RS. Its a "upload it and forget it" mindset. You upload it and as long as its not deleted, you never have to think about it again. Period. No reseeding, no ratio, no tied up bandwidth.

"come to our attention that you have violated our Conditions of Use by downloading files"

This bothers me, I'd liked rapidshare, but now, why not everyone uses just ifile.it? :)

^ check Why is RS so popular? (http://filesharingtalk.com/vb3/f-file-sharing-8/t-why-rs-so-popular-365181) Also, the notice you cited is fake.
