Win7. WinXP comes close because of the level of customization, but I'm sure Win7 will catch up to it in that regards, however XP just doesn't offer the features that 7 does.

Unless you like alotta 3rd party progs which can be buggy and hard to maintain.

Why not? I heard ppl love their Macs. Although I'd suggest Ubuntu. :) U can run it live off a CD or even a USB stick (the latter I didn't try, but U can install from it). Or it runs beautifully in a Vbox (as does Win7).

Here's the story. Years ago I did programming on Unix systems, so I always had a soft spot for it. :) Ever since Linux came on the scene (in early 90s?) from time to time I tried to install and run one or another distribution. They always felt half-baked - you could make it work but a few details got in the way. Not long ago I tried again - this time Ubuntu - and was pleasantly surprised. To make a long story short I'm in the process of switching from XP to Ubuntu now (have a dual boot). It came of age.

Granted, there are more apps (and games? - I'm not into games) for Windows and some of them exclusive but:
1. I have been running Firefox and Thunderbird in WinXP for quite some time, they are native to Linux, too.
2. Some of the apps in Linux (e.g. Krusader) run circles around Win apps.
3. There is Wine - you can run many Win apps under it.

Bottom line: after you tried Ubuntu you might feel that Windows is too restrictive and down your throat. :) Of course, Linux is very different and there is a learning curve... Personally, I think that if an average user could choose a preinstalled OS then more ppl would use Linux.

Ya I have to admit its pretty interesting , faster and I'm still playing with the 64 bit version but all and all impressed with the eye candy out of the box .

Hardware drivers were a breeze , FireFox 64 needs work but FireFox 32 bit still installs and works fine . I believe its because Flash player is not compatible with 64 bit .

Yesterday I did my first serious full install of ubuntu, on a old PentiumIII 700mhz with 384mb RAM and 20Gb HDD. (I was offered 6 of those machines, built by compaq)
The machine will fit some specific purposes, which include running in dual screen a interactive .ppsx presentation and run a .avi movie. I'll have to buy a 15" touchscreen on ebay this week, but I assured that it is bringing linux drivers.
After lots of console and googling, I've managed to put it running as I wanted, including a tightvnc server, a proftpd server, Wine and so many other stuff.
I was kinda used to debian, as I used it in the past to run a IPB board + FTP site, so it wasn't that hard.
I'm enjoying the OS, pretty light and simple. I've managed to crash it once already, and had to remove the limit of open files.

It's ok as an OS for some specific tasks, but I wouldn't trade it for my Win7 and Server 2008.

Pretty silly.
Just launch a full Slackware-12.2 (iso dvd) install and you won't have to face any struggle with drivers and such ;-)

Vista service pack 1 all the way, with a phone line connection from net zero.

Lol jk..

I have tried almost all operation systems (linux bases, xp, vista, 7, dos (lol), 2000, 98, etc.) and the best to date has been xp.

Linux is just not used for anything reasonable... Its just not practical in a world that runs on windows, and why use an emulator when you can have the real thing. Xp and windows 7 are the best solutions for an os currently.

*note* I'm talking about home office operating systems.

The only linux base os that runs with less resources than xp is DSL (damn small linux) which is a bootable os which has no comparison to xp.

Windows 2000 Pro, MCSE since it first came out, 5 machines in my home LAN. Never ran XP, too many friends with too much trouble, ran programs swapping out several MAJOR corporations off XP BACK to W2K before I retired. Maybe after several service packs it worked okay, don't know.

My W2K machines run 24/7/365, and I have to remind myself every month or two to reboot the things. ZERO DEFECTS. More solid than El Capitan.

Have one Vista machine, had to because too much s/w requires it. It's been 'in the shop' twice on MAJOR seize-ups, mostly due to poor updates (wouldn't 'roll back'), so much so I simply don't update it at all anymore. Don't run IEx so, that's 99% of the updates I don't need (Firefox fanboy).

Win7 I'll try once it gets at least one service pack out.

Windows 7 :w00t:
as some of you know, I've only had it for a few days now, bu so far I'm loving it.
I know it might be too soon but it's the details that got me exited about it,

like the easiness the task bar provides for switching between windows (I know many ppl hate it, so may be it's just the gimmick of it),
or how I can access my Messenger functions directly form the tab on the task bar, without having to go to the lower left corner of my desktop,
the cool transparent effect when you hover the pointer over a determinate tab,
the fact that it immediately recognized and added my two extra hard drives without any trouble,
and that when I turn on my HDTV to watch a movie I downloaded, it automatically configures it, I don't have to do anything,
when in Xp I had to do it manually from the ATI Control Center,
also when I connect my Zen W it recognizes it an open a neat window that displays the device status,
like space, battery and stuff, and also gives me a few automatic options to import music, videos, etc.

Still I guess more time has to pass so I can find out
if it gives me any issues.

Flash is cross platform. No big deal.
DX is the de facto gaming API used by all major developers.

And don't say openGL is great. Because it isn't.

That is true, but it was never given a fair chance was it.

Kind of reminds me of that awefull debate on global warming where us sceptics don't ever get the raw data.

Same with linux. Give it a fair chance. And you can't say it's worse when it does good with no money compared to your os.

I use linux too, have used it for years, both for servers and workstations. It has its uses, but they always require someone knowledgeable operating the network.
It will never take Windows' place because, among many things, it isn't as user friendly as windows is.
Try comparing the ease of plugging a phone to the computer, whether it's an iphone or PPC or a regular shitty phone, and then do the same at linux, where you have to go to the repos get lots and lots of dependencies for filesystems etc etc.
Try comparing the power management of linux compared to windows (on my eepc laptop windows 7 makes the battery last almost 1,5 hours plus, even after I use advanced stuff like powertop on linux to reduce it's operation to the max).
The list goes long. It's true linux was even more behind than now it still is, but it will only become mainstream when one of their distros starts thinking microsoft way. Think global.

For the average home user, it is simply not worth using. This kind of easiness comes with a price, and I'm talking about features some will never use, but which are there.

^^^. Linux takes time, and is a different beast. Most of us grown on looking at Windows too. The UI seems so much more easier and more intuitive. If everyone used Linux and then their kids would use it too, they would be more accustomed to the Linux look. Personally Windows 7 user here, and I love it. It lets me do all I need without the need to sudo. I'm not a complete fanatic of my computer. As long as it can do the simple things for me, it's all good.

Beck38 i agree with you,win2k rocks, bit old but very reliable as far as running without any probs, had to use xp/7 for my mcsa exams and i don't like what i see, I do use xp but its like a chick, requires a lot of attention all the time and if you don't pay attention to it, it bites u hard.
7 is a bit poo at the moment, been using it for a week and the drivers are a bit flakey for my audio and bluetooth, both have given me bsod, nice.
