Take away the unfortunate fact the two leads in this particular movie could not have been worse-chosen for any attempt at a French accent, The Duellists (1977) is a damn fine flicker, and one of the greatest, if not the greatest achievement in cinematography I have ever seen.
It is a bloody gorgeous film, it really is; stands up just fine after the thirty-odd years since I first saw it.
Check it out.

Pair this with Kubrick's Barry Lyndon and your eyes will bleed.
A lesser known companion would be Elvira Madigan.
All three seem more like animated paintings than film.
