View Full Version : Burning Cds

Can anyone tell me the difference between a music cd prerecorded which you put in a cdrom and burn directly to a cdr in another drive and....... ripping that prerecorded cd to wav and then burning from the wav.

Will one way have better quality than the other. I have heard this mentioned before, but I dont remember where and havent got a definitive answer on this... if there even is one.

What do you all think? Let's hear it!! B) :D :P

a .wav file is lossless.
Meaning, it has lost no audio data at all, which is why it's such a large format. If you rip a CD as .wav's, then burn them onto
another disc as an audio CD, you have an exact replica.
Digital media can be reproduced infinitely, with no quality loss, as long as you have the space for the uncompressed files.

so if I
Rip a CD at 192kbps
Burn it to CDR
Rip that CDR at 192kbps
Burn it to another CDR
Rip that CDR at 192 kbps
And burn the final CDR from that last rip,
there will be no quality lost?

That is incorrect. Because

Rip a CD at 192kbps 1
Burn it to CDR 2
Rip that CDR at 192kbps 3
Burn it to another CDR
Rip that CDR at 192 kbps
And burn the final CDR from that last rip,
there will be no quality lost?

at part 1 it was encoded (compressed) with a lossy codec, meaning it tossed aside some sound data. When you burned the CD, at 2,
this caused the tracks to be at a lower quality than the original.
Then you rip that at 192 (3) which means you lose possibly even more data (may depend on whether or not you
use the same encoder as you did at 1.)
The best you can expect to end up with in this scenario is a CD at maybe a bitrate of 192. Probably slightly less.

ok I actually did this (yes wasted some CDRs)
and the MP3s that I have now of the final rip do sound a bit...fuzzy
I used the same encoder but it is barely noticable.

I wouldn't consider it true 192

and I also won't be sharing these "fuzzy" files.

thats ripping an MP3. totally different thing. yes you would lose sound quility. but not if u did it 2 waves.

Nice experiment though.
But yes, as long as it's kept in a lossless format, it's endlessly perfect.

Back to the main topic, which will sound better?

A CDR burned directly from the CD
or a CD Ripped as MP3s then burned to an audio CD format?

i'd say:

A CDR burned directly from the CD

is it that difficult to understand?
any time you encode to MP3 you lose sound quality. at 320 the loss is quite minimal and unnoticable, but still
not 'perfect'.
If it's ripped and LEFT as a pure .wav file, it stays exactly the same quality as the original retail cd. Even when you burn it back
to another CDr.

yep thats exactly right its like ripping a iso image of teh cd and tehn burnign it it wont be any different

well the track that I burned. Which I thought sounded "fuzzy"
is from the Underworld Soundtrack, and it seems it might just be the song
(distortion)

Anyone that has the track 18 - Various - The Icarus Line - On The Lash
give it a listen and let me know if it sounds somewhat distorted or the fuzzyness is just an effect the artist used.

If so then I suppose I did not loose any sound quality :D

If not then this crappy file will still not get shared <_<

I would like to say that I am the topic starter, first of all, and secondly I do appreciate all the input, although I need to state my question once again.

It wasnt only answered incorrectly.... but requestioned incorrectly and again answered incorrectly.

Anyways, let me put this simply:

I am not referring to an MP3 I am talking striclty wav

The question is thus:

If I take a storebought prerecorded music cd and burn a cdr directly from that cd to the cdr.....

then.... I take that same store bought prerecorded music cd and rip it as a wav and then burn a cdr from that....

which finished product will be a replica or exact copy? The one that was ripped or the one that was burned from cd to cd? If there is a difference at all.

Thank you for your support

Software that allows you to copy "disk to disk" requires your pc to make a digital image of the file, a wav, which it stores in the buffer, then burns to the CDR.

Converting to wav, then burning the wav to CDR will result in the exact same end result.

I think you told me that before jibb... but i think you also mentioned something about copying from disc to disc not being as good or something to that effect. I did read it also somewhere. Any feed back on that?

Also, I am trying to get back on slsk. I dl the new client... but couldnt log in... so I copied all my config files and removed all the clients. Now I am going to try and load it all again. We shall see.

If you are ripping disk to disk, it shouldn't make a difference, providing your pc and burner are fast enough to do it smoothly on the fly. Most modern machines should be able to handle that without any trouble.

Good luck with SS, I'm taking a night off. Should have it back up in a few hours. :)
