A chain? You mean a metal bracelet or necklace? Oxidation (exposure to oxygen)turns a metal black, otherwise I have no idea what you are talking about.

Perspiration and oils from your body may have accelerated the process.

Well, silver is a semi-precious metal and exposure to oxygen turns it black. I would imagine that heat accelerates the process. Get some silver polish and it will return to normal.

Gold and silver are in the same family. Silver does not tarnish in regular air.
Silver is stable in pure air and water, but tarnishes when exposed to ozone, hydrogen sulphide, or air containing sulphur. (http://www.webelements.com/webelements/scholar/elements/silver/key.html)

Lame chemistry joke ahead!
Two atoms are fighting in a war.
Atom one says: I'm hit! I'm hit! I've lost an electron!
Atom two says: Are you sure??
Atom one says: I'm positive!
