I've often wondered, why in iTunes, it would list some artists by last name, and some others by first name. And then I realized this 'sort artist' field...Which is pointless to me. But is there some automated way to make the sort artist field the exact same as the artist field?

I've often wondered, why in iTunes, it would list some artists by last name, and some others by first name. And then I realized this 'sort artist' field...Which is pointless to me. But is there some automated way to make the sort artist field the exact same as the artist field?

If the 'Sort Artist' field is empty, it will use the 'Album Artist' name. If that is empty also, it will then revert to the 'Artist' field to sort the listing.

If it's bothering you, my suggestion is to highlight every track in iTunes > right-click > Get Info > Sorting tab > check all boxes and make sure the spaces are all empty. Then click OK.

That will remove the secondary sorting option for all your tracks. :)
