View Full Version : Why does uTorrent keep stopping?

I don't use torrents very much but I've just reinstalled Windows 7 and need to use Bittorrent to get some of my Usenet stuff downloaded.

I've installed the latest uTorrent and every torrent I'm trying to snatch just keeps stopping. If I stop/restart uTorrent then the torrent will download for about 5 - 10 seconds then start to slow down and ultimately stop again. This just keeps happening over and over.

I don't see any errors and the status shows as "Downloading". Does anyone know why they keep stopping? :dabs:

What OS are you using?

Seeing as I just installed Windows 7 and uTorrent, I don't know which is causing the problem.

Looks like I'm gonna stay with 1.8.3 for now even tho I'm running XP.
Have you tried going back to the previous version?

The newest ut version doesn't even work with wine :/

Haven't tried in my PC (win XP) though.

I've just stuck with 1.8.3 after seeing some tracker incompatibilities, I would first try installing that.

Really!!! Maybe that explains my problem (sorry to hijack skiz.. but this really caught my attention).

I had a whole messload of problems with uT after I upgraded to 1.8.3.My o/s is ubuntu 8.10 and I'm running uT with Wine.

Question for the uT/Ubuntu geeks out there: Can I downgrade to an earlier version of uTorrent and not mess up the torrents I'm running now? Not that any are working, but they're at the seeding level and I don't want to mess that up. What is the earliest version that I can go to that won't give me tracker-errors (private trackers), and is bug-free running with wine?

Thanks in advance for any ideas :)

Gah...looks like another version that should have stayed beta...:ermm:
Seems about once every 6 months or so they release a buggy version and everyone has to rollback. :fist:

TBH, I don't update till the program itself (when I run it) tells me that there's a new version and asks me if I want to DL it. That's usually when most trackers whitelist it. I did see BMTV blacklisting it a couple days ago, btw.

Well, you can downgrade without any problems, you will keep your torrents ;)

And there's no bug free version of utorrent for ubuntu (it runs under wine), if you don't want to have any problems i recommend you to go with a linux native bittorrent client. Yeah, there are versions of ut which have less bugs, but when your running apps under wine, it's never perfect.

I've had ubuntu 8.10 too, and for me 1.8.3 was stable and i never had problems. But i've seen a few friends with many problems running that same version in the same OS (dunno why). If that's your case try to downgrade to 1.8.2, unless you use trackers like hdbits or bmtv (you i'll have you client banned ).

If all this doesn't work and you... well, debian works better with utorrent. :)

Edit: Which trackers errors does it give you and in which trackers?

I had a problem with 1.8.4 and windows 7 the problem was it would upload really fast and then drop to zero every 30 seconds
and i thought it was my hdd or settings in utorrent and then i just downgraded to 1.8.2 with no problems what so ever and all my torrents and setting remained the same and no more fluctuation in upload speed or any kind of problems.:01:

almost forgot i had the same issues with 1.8.3 speed up and then down 1.8.2 was a winner in my case:yup:

I just remembered I created this thread.

I just opened uTorrent to run two torrents and was prompted to update to 1.8.4.

I did.

After doing so I started the two new torrents and they both ran and downloaded just fine. Seems the problem was with 1.8.3. :idunno:

check wireshark to see if ur ISP is messing w/ your packets. Comcast used sandvine a while back to stop uploading and this sounds very similar.
