View Full Version : Love Butchering The English Language

Am I the only one who sees a huge rise in the number of people who type "of" instead of "have"? Example "I should of done this" "I wish you would of..." etc.

If you are getting sick of seeing the same people butcher the english language in some specific way post it here.

I'm not a grammar expert, but some of my peeves include...

"First off" instead of 'First of all'

"your" instead of 'you're' or 'You are'

"there" instead of 'their'

"noone" instead of 'no one' or 'nobody'

But I can tollerate a normal typo, where you hit 2 keys at once, or hit the key next to the one you intended to hit.

The one I really hate is rife among football commentators:

That's a quality goal, real class

Well, they're a quality side

'Quality' is not a http://www.mcbriens.net/liam/img/smilies/swearani.gifing adjective!

The usage of "Then" (http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=Then), when the correct word is "Than" (http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=Than). Seeing as how "Than" is a perfectly good word, distinct from "then" in appearance and pronunciation.

But I've got no problem with colloquialisms, like "yer" instead of "your", or "I should of done this" instead of "I should have done this", or "sorta'" instead of "sort of".

A good thing about the internet is the linguistic freedom/anarchy that exists, so I'm not sure this thread is a good idea.

Quality can be used as an adjective. Dictionary (http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=quality&r=67)

There are literally too many to note, but alongside Lamsey's I must note (from American football) the decades-old use of the phrase, "high, end-over-end kick" should long ago have been replaced with the correct "high end-UNDER-end kick...."

I can't TELL you how much that bothers me.

I hate "Unloosen a light bulb", that means you are tightening it.

I hate "Talking behind your back", that means you are talking in front of them.

I hate the word "troop". It means "cavalry unit", not a single soldier. A boyscout belongs to a troop, not to a soldier.

Some are just hilarious, though-

I live amongst a rather large Finnish population; shortly after I moved here, I became involved in a community project which required some minor wiring (household-type) to be updated, I was requested by my co-worker (a young lad by the name of Sulo Peltoniemi) to "throw the switch" which he communicated to me by use of the phrase, PUT IT GOING, EH?

Had I been sitting in a chair, I would surely have fallen out. :)

"your" signifies genitive, ie: ownership, "that's your car" whereas "you're" consists of "you" and "are".

Yer can be used interchangeably as far as I know, therefore I will hereby opt for using yer, all the time.

Yes-

It approaches a point where, when one (such as myself) is considered to be persnickety with regard to proper usage, it makes you want to scream, IS IT TOO MUCH TOO ASK?

Apparently, it is. :(

To anyone who doesn't find use for this topic, you can stop replying anytime you like. I thought I stated that this was just a place for people to vent about ignorance in the original post. No need to get offended if you are one of the offenders in fact you can stop reading now and let us neurotic types continue. Thank you

Beyond that anyone who is enjoying this topic should really check out this page (http://maddox.xmission.com/) especially the fan/hate mail.

I see a lot of these errors made. The odd word here and there that is not correct. That's ok but what get me going is the users that think it's cool to use abbreviated words every second word.
