Which one of this, StyleXp or Windows Blind, is a better and more preferable Visual Styles software for Windows XP Home?

I tried StyleXP before, I didn't have much problems with it.

but from what i gather, window blinds seems to have a larger variety of visual styles to pick and customise from.

Windows blinds is great for those who don't run XP. For those who do, StyleXP is preferrable as it uses XP's own in built skinning engine. WindowsBlinds is really just skinning on top of windows and subsequently needs more memory. There are loads of themes available for both, i can't comment on WB's as i've never used it.

What usually comes from these discussions is that the UXTHEME Multi-Patcher (http://www.lightstar1.com/install.htm) is the best option. With XP 'patched', there is no need for any third party apps. Simply select themes via Windows display properties. Make sure and follow the instructions and you will have no problems with it.

The best place to find themes and visual styles is http://www.themexp.org/ .

The manual version of the UXTHEME.dll patch is your best and safest alternative to StyleXP. Made by TGT Soft as freeware so it is a helluva lot more stable than the auto-patch version, which produces mixed results for many users.

Here is a link to the downloads for the patch and instructions:

Manual Patching Made Easy (http://www.lightstar1.com/install.htm)

Besure to use the correct version. SP-1 or Non Sp-1.

One point also is the use of ressources. My styleXP uses 10Mb of memory usage.
Maybe someone could tell how much win-Blind uses.

How about neither, I find Aston (http://www.astonshell.com) to be much muh better. I suggest you try iy out.

Aston is the only one that does enough to make a third-party app acceptable.
Otherwise, go low-impact and get the patch.

I just installed Style XP 1.01p.

It's doing ok so far. But this patch sounds atractive, because I hate programs running in the background, esp when you play agame and it lags and you know what maybe causing it.

Maybe I'll try the patch...

I just installed the patch but I've no idea how to use it...

the visual style i'm using has only got a msstyles file and a shell folder. I got no idea how to apply it.

It seems liek I need a theme file. Can the patch install a visual style with only .msstyles file???

put your theme files in
%Systemroot%\Resources\Themes

DONT buy the Style crap XP!!! Download the patch, but make sure to execute it in SAFE MODE only!!! If you are a newb, watch out!

Download the Neowin edition or search google for Lightstars version, just make sure to read the read me!

omg the patch is so annoying.

i decided to go back to using my cracked version of style xp.

What I did,

downloaded the auto-installer, i restarted, and when I tried using a msstyle by double-clicking on it, display properties pop up but no visual style loaded.

so I thought it didn't get installed properly. So I uninstalled and reinstalled the patch, still to no avail.

So I got frustrated with the auto-installer, and tried the manual patch instead for SP1.

When I was doing it, I realise I don't have the folder 'dllcache' under system32 folder.

Till then, I already got annoyed, so I decided to use system restoration to totally get rid of the changes I incidentally made in the process.

I had an error system restoring. I don't care whether the dll caused it, but whatever it is, the bloody patch frustrated me as hell.

Back to style xp for me.

the directions are quite simple.
apply patch.
reboot.

display properties > appearance
to change your theme.

put new themes in C:\Windows\Resources\Themes

dllcache is a hidden folder, you should change your Windows Explorer view settings.

I thought the patch came with directions. <_<

Yeah it is hella simple and hella good. You download install, then reboot. After that you download a skin and it installs itself.

it didn't work well for me.

I think i'll stick to style xp till I can be bothered figuring out the patch again.

damned urge to format...again 3 formats under 1.5weeks. :) :) :)

well actually is twice. If i do it now again, it's gonna be 3 times.

Maybe I'm a perfectionist, the idea of me not being able to system restore leaves me an impression that my PC is majorly screwed.

And everytime my startup or shutdown takes too long or hangs, the urge comes about again...

I only used 5.4gigs of my disk space...and I wanna reformat....damned,.

dllcache does not exist on my computer  .

I did a search, I select option to show all hidden folders/files.

dllcache folder nowhere to be seen.

edit: i have to deselect 'hide protected operating system files' as well, did it and now it's there.

btw search function does not even find this. <_<
