My apology if this has already been covered in an existing thread.

For several months every time I go to either the Mininova or The Pirate Bay sites I get infected by a Trojan. I use Windows XP Home OS, IE 8 browser, and my virus / spyware protection and firewall is McAfee, and it is up to date. The McAfee software detects and tries to block the infection, but I still end up infected. The virus is the type that tells you your system is infected and provides a link to fix it, and I assume if you follow the link they try to sell you some fake anti-virus software.

In the past I have been creating a new restore point before I go to the sites, and then doing a system restore afterward; however, yesterday the virus changed something to block me from doing this. I had to do a recovery of my entire C drive – a major PITA.

Does anyone know of a way to stop this?

I don't know of anyone (save yourself) who runs IE, and McAfee hasn't been trusted since the original owner professed to distributing virus' to promote the sale of his av.

In any event, what your seeing is probably a 'pop-up' scam. If either of those sites were 'infected'... there would be alot more ink in the cloud about it.

I use Kaspersky and Opera (and Firefox only when I need to). I regularly visit both of those sites and I've never seen anything like you describe.

Opera is FAR more secure than anything you could ADD to Firefox. Those who take the time to learn it's features, rarely go back.

You get viruses on your computer by simply visiting mininova or piratebay?

Funny.

First time I heard about that. I wonder why nobody came up with this before.

I'm not affected by viruses (Mac) but I can hardly believe this.

As someone said before, switch to a real antivirus like Kaspersky. Mcafee was good back in the 1990s but not anymore. Also, use Superantispyware free edition to scan your system from time to time - this can detect and remove some pretty rare and bad ass spyware/trojan infections.

But there is only so much AV programs can do to protect you from ALL kinkds of threats. Before you download any torrents, make sure to read the comments. If the file looks suspicious, use a online scanner service such as virustotal to scan it just to be on the safe side.

I use both TPB and Mininova and have no problem with virus. You must know what NOT to download and never click any other link other than the torrent files.Learn how to recognized fake torrent and get a REAL anti virus. I use ESET Smart Security.

Yeah...looks like Kaspersky has tightened their game. A while back my wife was just grabbing a fresh key about once a month after hers would get blacklisted. Suddenly the keys were lasting less than 24hrs. Then switched to the trial resetter, that lasted about 2 months then Kasp. nuked the resetter app on sight...even when d/led to a 'do not scan' folder.
But Kasp is worth the money so we bought it...no regrets there.

If nothing else OP....at least install the fully functional free 30 day trial of Kasp. ;)

The problem is solved.

I installed Opera (thanks Wwwildthing) and used it in lieu of IE 8 to go to Mininova and The Pirate Bay and I no longer get infected by the Trojans.

I’m going to stay with McAfee at least for now since except for this instance I haven’t had any problem with it. FYI the June 2009 issue of Consumer Reports had an article on computer security software. Below is a list of the test results from highest to lowest rated.

1. ESET Smart Security
2. McAfee Internet Security
3. Microsoft Windows Live OneCare
4. Symantec Norton Internet Security
5. Kaspersky Internet Security
6. BitDefender Internet Security
7. Trend Micro Internet Security
8. F-Secure Internet Security
9. CA Internet Security Suite Plus
10. Check Point ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite
11. PC Tools Internet Security
