In case you missed it, Psystar's new downloadable software lets you install OS X on any PC with a Core 2 Duo, Quad, i7 or Xeon Nehalem processor. CrunchGear tried it on an HP TouchSmart, and even the touchscreen worked.

Turns out the OS X install screen takes ages to come (they thought it had crashed), but with some patience they had themselves a hackintosh.

Psystar says the $50 download allows for the permanent installation of multiple operating systems on a single system, and that it works with Windows 7. A trial version is available (with a 2 hour time limit), and comes with all the expected warnings of them not being responsible for you losing your data should thing go awry. "

Awesome I might try this later. I've been thinking of using one of the various methods but this seems to be the easiest way I've seen (I don't want to mess with magic sticks and kexts and whatnot).

I almost bought a pystar machine when they first came out.

I would give it a shot if I could find it anywhere.

Doesn't appear to be on Usenet or torrents.

It's downloadable free from their website then you just have 2 hours to activate for $50...

If I'm going to be using an illegal operating system, I'd rather just steal it outright.

So if you’re even remotely interested in this I’d say to download it right now because Apple’s lawyers will be all over this within a matter of seconds. You can count on that.

Most of that thread is bickering over copyrights and EULAs. If it were a hoax and didn't work, they wouldn't be giving a trial period I don't think. I seems to me that they've perfected the install method that they have been using to convert PC's and now have decided to sell that on it's own, thus not being illegal anymore.

Several folks in that thread say it works fine. This one is pretty much to the point:

So I glanced over all 15 or whatever pages and didn't really see much worth commenting on. Typical fanboy banter. But, I tried the "demo" to boot my retail 10.6 on my Hac (see sig for specs) and it booted flawlessly. I didn't use their app to "setup my devices" because I don't want to pay $50 when I'm completely capable of doing it myself.

Installed PCEFI, added my device ID to the graphics driver and put my audio .kext in /S/L/E. Flawless Hacintosh. I was able to upgrade to 10.6.1 right from System Update. This was certainly easier than the last method I used to install 10.6 (my boot132 cd wouldn't boot SL). I had to install from 10.5.

Anyway, thanks to Pystar for the loader. Quite awesome. And if you do a little reading, you don't have to pay the $50.

Hmmm, I'm lazy and don't want to read, so what's the work around not to pay $50? Not to setup the audio and graphics and what not?

At least if Apple shuts it down or the site goes down, I'll have the ISO and will upload it to Usenet, and once I'm un-drunk, I will right up a tutorial to bypass the $50 fee, and hopefully my friends at VDOWN (BetaMaster, FFF, SND, CORE, iND's, ETC) will break this bad boy apart.

You don't, you can use the free boot loader and just follow the guide (depending on PC) at InsanelyMac.
