I've never thought of myself as a film buff. I hardly watch older movies or independent and artistic films. But more and more I find myself turning off a movie twenty minutes in because it isn't good despite some good reviews.
I want to watch great movies. I might have a chance to watch a movie a week. I don't want to waste two hours watching something stupid. As I look back at the handful of movies I can actually recall enjoying, Rear Window is the first that comes to mind in the category of classics, Run Lola Run is the first in the category of contemporary artistic films and Life is Beautiful in the foreign category. All of these films are memorable and I was likely only exposed to them because they were relatively popular.
I'm a still a bit nervous about delving into the world of cinema unguided. Frankly, the avant-garde style of a film I once saw at the Guggenheim, something from The Cremaster Cycle. And as for following along with some external guide I've visited the Criterion website a number of times, but it is such a large collection I don't know where to start.
So what I hope to find is a torrent tracker that offers great movies that would be accessible and helpful in terms of finding these movies. I would prefer something with a nice archive and ratio requirements that would allow me to dive right into older torrents without fear. I want a place where I can learn about great movies.
