With the latest version, Ubuntu will give you integration with cloud computing and net-books. The ability to deploy applications in the cloud much easier than before is one of Canonical’s goal for 9.10 using Amazon’s EC2 platform. Canonical is also trying to beat the 25-second booting time when using Ubuntu 9.04 on net-books.

Free and useful applications are also the main strong points of the OS, just as in Ubuntu 9.04, and the ease of installation has never been this good. Now you can run Ubuntu within Windows using the Wubi – a Windows-based Ubuntu installer – for those people who just want to test out Ubuntu before giving up Windows.

The CD image gives you three ways of installing: live from the CD, as a demo and then a full install and as an install within Windows.

With the “install within Windows”, Wubi adds just adds an entry to the Windows boot menu that allows you to run Linux. Ubuntu is being installed within a file in the Windows file system c:/ubuntu/disks/root.disk. This file is seen by Ubuntu as a real hard disk.

You should note that when using Ubuntu within Windows, the Hibernation mode is disabled and there is a “slightly reduced disk performance”. At the moment, Ubuntu 9.10 cannot be installed in Windows 7, which is quite obvious since the Wubi installer is supported on all versions of Windows 98 through Vista (expect Windows ME). But they said that more platforms will be supported in the future, as well as Mac OSX.

Ubuntu comes loaded with a lot of valuable software and system tools. The most basic of all of these is of course OpenOffice, and by basic I surely mean “a must-have”. It features Presentation, Spreadsheet and Word Processor. For your mailing need you have the Evolution mail client which can sync up IMAP and SMTP e-mail accounts. There’s also a calendar, also supplied by Evolution. Users can import vCards, .csv, vCalendar and others into Evolution.

As a web browser, you have Firefox 3.5.3 by default, for instant messaging you have the Empathy IM client and for your torrent needs you have the Transmission BitTorrent. Included in Ubuntu 9.10 is also a Terminal Server client and a Remote Desktop Viewer.

For multimedia, you have at your disposal applications such as F-Spot Photo manager, which is a very simple image editor. Fortunately, you have GIMP Image Editor which is a much more feature-rich app. Sound and video applications: Brasero Disc Burner, Movie Player, Rtythmbox Music Player and Sound Recorder.

Stepping into the system management tools area, you have Computer Janitor, which is a utility that helps you get rid of all those software packages that you might not need anymore and also suggests configuration changes that are meant to boost the overall system performance. System Utility is an app that tests various components of the system in order to see if they are working properly, such as audio, fingerprint readers, peripherals and more.

Some other changes in Ubuntu 9.10 include the ability to add software with the new Ubuntu Software Center instead of the old “Add/Remove” feature in the Applications menu.

Problems such as the boot-time flickering has been taken care of, thanks to the new Intel video architecture, and also, the suspend/resume time has been improved.

A more detailed in-depth information is found on Ubuntu.com

With the release of Ubuntu 9.10 , Canonical is certainly bringing Linux more closer to the “normal user” and coupled with the fact that it is FREE, I see no reason in not wanting to test it.
