create a new folder somewhere on your computer
put all your shortcuts in that folder
right click on taskbar and go to toolbars>new toolbar
point to the folder with shortcuts in it
minimize all active windows
drag the new toolbar to the side of your screen
right click on sidebar, click on "always on top" and "auto hide"
done :D

Better yet get iconoid http://www.sillysot.com/ you can get rid of those ugly boxes under your icons, you can make your icons disappear after "so many" secs of a idle mouse, then move your mouse to make icons reappear, and much more..and its FREE

I do this regularly. Well, not exactly what you said but...

I create a folder in MY DOCUMENTS called MY SIDEBAR.

I then drop all my shortcuts in it.

Now I minimize everything so I can see the left side of my screen. Go up to My Documents, grab the My Sidebar folder, and drag it up against the left side of the screen. (This is what's different between your instructions and mine.)

Right click on the menu and de-select Show Title and Show Text, and select Auto Hide and Always On Top.

This is a very convenient alternative to QuickLaunch, which sucks my ass.

Also, my preference of the left side is purely my choice; you can use any edge the Taskbar is not occupying.

Another, related thing I do which is not really compatible with Sidebar, is when I am on a forum and I want to track a topic, and they don't have email notification (like they have here) I go to File>Send>Shortcut to Desktop. My Desktop is cluttered with shortcuts to tracked forums (I'm something of a web spider) and I have all my favorite apps on the sidebar. :D
