OK, so I put in something simple like Madonna for the search, it searches, I get nothing. Maybe I'm such a noob I'm doing it wrong, I dunno .... any light to shed??

choose the option music and then search for madonna ;)

if that doesn't work go to -> FIle -> jump supernode

FuNkY CaPrIcOrN seems to be too busy, amused, or important to answer your question but the problem with Madonna may be that quite a few files were purposely f**ked up with her berating p2p'rs midway through the song whle others played for only 15 seconds and then went to an ear piercing screetch.
A lot of this type of music has been similarly destroyed.
Find another source or change your musical tastes.

I'm sure someone will follow this up by suggesting you use soulseek but I would recommend you avoid this arrogant bunch like the plague.
