Where do you live? If you live in the US, go dell all the way. Cheapest and most reliable service, as you can expect your laptop to need repair at least once a year in normal use. I will post for you one suggested system in a minute.

I suggest Dell's refurbished website for a laptop because they are cheapest and best with returns. Search the net for coupon codes too. Here is an idea of a good one:

see here for the whole inventory of refurbed goods (http://www.dell.com/us/en/dfh/products/line_notebooks.htm)

this one is a little out of your range, but it has a 64 mb gfx card

I am telling you the Dell refurbed option is a very wise choice, I got one that was totally new. What dell calls refurbished is 90% new as the cost to restock is more than to discount the cancelled ones.

See if you can afford one of the new Widescreen dells. They are probably around a bit over your price range.

I wouldn't buy anything but Dell or Gateway. ;) Unless you want gaming, in which case I would get Alienware ( :o ) lolol

Definitely Dell. I bought a new Inspiron 8100 almost two years ago. At the time, it cost me ~$3,600 (total: shipping, taxes, and that's in Canadian dollars!). I really couldn't afford anything at the time, so I had to get a small bank loan to pay for it. So believe me, I did my research. When comparing other similar brands (in terms of sys specs) Dell was usually cheaper. And also, Dell had little things that I just liked better, like having a trackstick and a touchpad, better style casings, etc. And Dell always has promotions on (free memory upgrade, or free DVD upgrade, or free shipping, or combinations of free things... my system also got me a $250.00 rebate check :) ). On top of all that, Dell also has the trusted namebrand and customer support (blah, blah, blah... I sound like tv ad!).
