If kazaa will do this, will there still be a 'free' kazaa lite?

Kazaa set to end its days of free music - [P2P News]

The world's most popular song-swapping network, Kazaa, has thrown its weight behind a plan to start billing song swappers for their music downloads.
The proposal, which could finally end the days of the free lunch for millions of music fans, has been put to big US record labels at the same time as a new legitimate version of the former file-swapping giant Napster is launched in the US.
The idea is to phase in a billing mechanism for peer to peer networks, such as Kazaa and Morpheus, that allow users to copy music directly from each other's hard drives.

Initially payments would be by credit card, but in the future downloads would be automatically detected and a charge added to the monthly internet service provider bill.
With the success of Apple's iTunes and the launch of the new legal Napster in the US this week, the five big record labels are finally getting behind online music distribution. But they are still turning their backs on the peer to peers seen to support widespread music piracy.
Kazaa now hopes the music industry will forget past grievances and tap into the cleaned up versions of the networks that already have millions of users, rather than build their own networks from scratch.
"The whole effort here is to go where the consumers are, to convert all that energy to selling licensed music," said Marty Lafferty, president of the Distributed Computing Industry Association.
Nikki Hemming, the Sydney-based chief executive of Sharman Networks, which runs Kazaa, said the business model offered "great hope for the entertainment industry".
The five big record labels are yet to respond to the proposal.

This doesn't affect Kazaa Lite!

Sharman Networks can't force us to upgrade to a newer version :D

What happens if the whole fast track network is altered so no program can access it without a password/login?

did the article say when they are planning on doing this (i just skimmed the article)? also, I highly doubt that k-lite will still function witht the subscribed users of kazaa.

Kazaa Lite can act as a supernode too. As long as there are enough Kazaa Lite based supernodes, then the network as we know it will keep existing.

Kazaa Lite can't be forced to upgrade like can be done with Kazaa Media Desktop (remember version 2.0.0 to 2.0.2). That piece of code has been disabled by k++.

Sharman Networks, Joltid and all other companies currently in control of the FastTrack Network, have the opportunity to alter the network protocol, thus booting KaZaA and KaZaA Lite clients from the network, much like Morpheus. KaZaA Lite would become un-useable but KaZaA would obviously be updated with the current configuration (with a new billing system) and possibly iMesh and Grokster would comply with Sharman Networks' intentions. The KaZaA client would then have to be hacked, in which case we would be forced to update versions.

Will this only affect music downloading? What about downloading other types of files, I persume this would mean the end of free filesharing.

No, I doubt it, Ike was solely referring to MP3s in his initial post. That's the only item worth downloading on KaZaA nowadays, aided with the lack of I.C.H., bogus files and objects that contribute to degraded performance. My advice, stick to Shareaza (http://www.shareaza.com); it's as good as P2P can be. :)

If kazaa lite does get booted off the main network, we will get a far clearer picture of how many users use kazaa lite. :D

Thats crap, they're using YOUR bandwith to sell songs on! Thats making you pay for something you are providing, if they did this they should do it on their own damn servers! They are using your hard disks your bandwith, and taking your money!!!
