I can't get my laptop to find my mp3 player. I know the cable and the USB port are working, because the player is charging.
It's XP so I thought it would recognise any plug and play device

Any ideas?

What kind of player is it, and did it come with a cd or something?

It's a Samsung Y3. It did come with a CD, but I never used it on any other machines.

I'm on Vista btw, not XP. Isn't there some way to search for new hardware devices?

My sister, wot owns a samsung player, says hers just turned up like a mass storage device when she connected it. She runs win7 though, I should say.

You may wanna try one of the rear usb ports that are placed directly on the mobo, just in case it's 1.1 bracket compatibility issue or something.

Other than that, the internets says to try this (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/939211) and maybe look for some drivers.

yeah, that's what usually happens. I've tried all the different USB ports, but it makes no difference.

Went on to the Samsung website and am downloading a driver now.

Fuck sake. Apparently it is a common Vista problem. The website doesn't provide drivers, so I've e-mailed Samsung support. They're in Malaysia. This should be fun.

Hey Skweeks, any luck?

If XP or Vista still won't recognize your mp3 player or it happens in the future follow these steps:

Go to device manager.
Find your mp3 player it will be located under disk drives.
Right click, open properties and click update driver.
Don't bother with connecting to the internet to search for driver - choose driver manually.
Choose usb storage device as driver.
Driver will be installed.

Didn't work doobs, it's not showing in device manager, or anywhere else for that matter...

If you have a spare USB cable for you mp3 player try switching them out. I have seen USB cables allow a device to charge, but not allow the device to be recognized by the system.

Also, check the connection of the USB cable to your mp3 player. Wiggle the cable around in different directions, making sure it's secure in the jack of the player.
I have a bad input on my iPod, and it takes a minute or two of me messing around before Windows recognizes it.

I found Vista compatible drivers for your mp3 player, Skweeks. I'm sure of the exact model number, but they're here:

http://www.samsung.com/download/Model_Select.aspx?type=Digital+Audio+Player&typecode=8&subtype=MP3+Flash&subtypecode=801&model=YP-S3JAWY&filetype=SW&language

Those aren't drivers doobs, they are just the software to manage the music that come with the device. I already have media studio installed, it's not finding the device either.

What is the exact model number of your mp3 player?

The internet says there is sometimes an issue with the firmware, which you can update.

Look here to read people talking pish about it.

The drivers are located on the Samsung site.

http://www.samsung.com/download/Model_Select.aspx?type=Digital+Audio+Player&typecode=8&subtype=MP3+Flash&subtypecode=801&model=YP-300H&filetype=DR&language=

You just need to put in the proper model number.

A firmware update as JPaul mentioned could possibly fix your problem, also. Just make sure you update to the correct firmware version. The link is from 2007.

Yeah the camera works fine on it :)

I plugged it in at work and it works fine here, so it's not the cable either.
