I guess the two most important questions ( to me, at least) would be...
Does your motherboard support a faster chip?
Is there room for more memory?
Edit: If the answer is yes, I would be tempted to upgrade and wait to build new for a while. See how the 64bit chip thing shakes out...

I started off just like you did and just kept picking up parts when I coul;d find them at the right price and I sold all my old parts for half of what I bought my new ones for.I am still upgrading and pretty much have nothing left of the original comp I started with other than the keyboard and mouse and floppy drive and I am only into my complete system (including my speakers, printer, scanner, gamepad etc) for about 600-700 if that.
It's going to be a while before 64-bit processors are a reasonable price, I would suggest this is upgrade time, then start saving your money for 64-bit next time.
Upgrade the motherboard, processor and ram, there are some good deals around if you don't go for the ultimate specs. Remember to check if your power supply is good enough.

so what upgrade will be the better bang for the buck:
-CORSAIR 512MB PC3200 DDR RAM
-Asus Motherboard for AMD Athlon XP/Duron Processors, Model# A7N8X Deluxe Retail
-AMD ATHLON XP 2500+ "Barton" 333 FSB PROCESSOR CPU- RETAIL
$300
or
-CORSAIR 512MB PC3200 DDR RAM
-ABIT IS7,Intel 865PE chipset for Socket 478 P4 ATX motherboard RETAIL
-Intel Pentium 4 / 2.4CGHz 512k socket 478 Hyper Threading Technology 800 MHz FSB - RETAIL
$365
and if i get one of these combinations will all of my other parts work like my videocard and my hard-drive?

Of course your HDD and video card will work with either.
I'm not touching the AMD v. Intel question...

ur vd card might survive for a couple more months, but ur cpu needs serious renovating.
I would personally go for the amd option, I would think you can get the price down below $300 with a little shopping around, or go for a faster processor. You should certainly be able to get a 2700+ processor for the same price as a 2.4GHz P4.
