I'm not sure what you are complaining about, but you have to unpack the file sometime. Either before you watch or during.
If I wanted I could click the rared file, it gets extracted, for me in C:\temp, when I close the core media player the file gets deleted.

For example - on mac if i use Plex interface I dont have to unpack the files - it can play the vids directly from rars.

If you mean playing movies directly from the RAR parts, Dziobas RAR Player is what you're looking for. :)

And double the amount of HDD space needed to do the same thing?

The whole point it that I can watch the movie while seeding...else I have to unpack, watch, delete....pointless...

Have you tried mpc/mpc-hc and rarfilesource filter? I don't know if there is a problem with windows 7 but it used to work fine. You just have to use ffdshow
Also I've read that vlc does play rar but haven't tried

Google "WinMount" and see what you think. I haven't tried it yet so I can't say if it will allow you to play your vids.
