This is my shitty little laptop. Vista runs like crap on it, and it's probably infested with malware slowing it down. I want to reformat and install XP but what do you guys think about XP vs Win7? I know Win7 is alot prettier but I wouldn't use those functions anyways, and it would just be more work for me to customize it for functionality and not appearance. Is it a bad idea to install XP instead of Win7? Also keep in mind that I need the most recent updates to connect to resnet, so hopefully Microsoft cannot in the future somehow block updates to illegitimate copies. Would hate to have to buy Win7 later on.

You should try Tiny7 if you want to install 7 on your laptop. Most of the useless features and functions are removed on it, although make sure you look at the NFO, perhaps a feature you do need is gone.

The main feature I need is the legit auto-updates from MS. Would Tiny7 run better than XP? That sounds intriguing, I'll look into it cause then I wouldn't have to worry about newer programs with no XP support.

I didn't check that when I installed it on a VM, but according eXPer1ence (the modder) there's no need to update Windows, as "anything that could be exploited has been removed".

Well to connect to the internet my computer has to be scanned by a 'clean access' program which makes sure I have the latest updates. So I suppose this wouldn't work if it doesn't update. I guess rolling back to XP is the safest bet.

Might have some driver issues with Winxp but not Win7 , I say go for the Win7 Home version you won't be disappointed it will be a lot faster than Vista .

On a side note I see BIE has a December release of Ultimate 32 and 64 bit out now .

I want something that will legitly update itself, not something that you will have to torrent updates. Does a release like this exist? I can find alot of "Ultimate" Win7 releases, but no "home" ones.

Yes, it exists. Any of the BIE versions do that. You don't even have to enter a serial during instalation and MS site recognizes your OS as genuine.

They've a full December update, as Pete stated above.

You said " Would hate to have to buy Win7 later on." so just suggested Home but yes just D/L BIE Ultimate .

I did n't have to run an activator but their out there if needed . I'm running the 64 bit and only problem I had was Firefox 64 bit so just went to FF 32 bit . Ultimate should have all your drivers as well .

I just read the other day in a PC magazine where MS plans on completetly stopping any support of XP, including critical updates, in 2014. So you have 4 years until XP becomes a liability to use online. That may not stop me though, I think a good firewall and antivirus along with some reasonable site visiting limitations could carry me into 2016 or 17 easily.

BUT, and thats a big butt, Win7 will eventually be where you want to be, and by starting now, by the time 2014 comes around you probably will not care about XP anymore, You will know your way around 7 Like a champ by then if you play with it.

Your laptop should run Windows 7 perfect, may not play hd games but it should run fine for basic stuff.

There's the drivers issue which favors Win7, but is there really any other good reason to install it on a laptop I use purely for word processing, netbrowsing, and playing old games (Unreal, Unreal 2, System Shock 2, CS 1.6, baldurs gate...)

From these answers I feel that either one will work fine with what I'm planning on using it for. I'm thinking the main thing will be compatibility with old software vs. compatibility with new mandatory software like antiviruses and MS word. I'll install XP on this laptop and then Win7 on my desktop because my desktop will be using current day software. That way I'll have the best of both worlds, and since most stuff work on XP I doubt I'll run into much trouble.

In the comments for BIE windows 7, it says you have to check 'do not update' or else it won't work. And people are having problems with it saying they have 30 days to activate.

Which release did you guys get that will always update fine? Also I don't see a 32 bit version, will 64bit work with any laptop, because right now I'm using 32bit Vista

This seems to be the latest release. But I guess I can download any of the older BIE releases as well, and just update it, correct?

Much fasster , and will stay faster for ever , I have it on my old lap , and it's never getting slower than the first run ( might get a lil bit slower ,but that if u got a load of appz and heavy ones on ur pc )

so I'm saying , I love the speeds , the nice fast start up , the supporting of drivers ( even a lot of old drivers ) and a lot of other features that win 7 provide .

at last , that's what I have , by using a legit license for win 7 ( yup legit one , and update normally and daily from ms , but I don't like updates , casuse I have a bad experience about updates in vista , which slow the win after a while , but didn't try the update feature for a long time on win 7 , but 100 % worsk fine ) and a kis 2010 legit key which I bought both for like 7 $ only xD .

Thanks for all the advice! I downloaded and installed Win7 illegitimately and it runs and works great! Am very happy with the results of my reformat.

Here is a quote and reference for anyone hesitant about using an illegal copy of Windows:

Internet Explorer 8 (IE8), which Microsoft has billed as its most secure browser to date, can be downloaded and installed on a counterfeit copy of Windows, for example. And Microsoft lets people running bogus copies Windows obtain security patches via Windows Update.On-again, off-again debates about the wisdom of blocking security-oriented downloads like patches or defensive software have centered around the argument that Microsoft should protect all users, including pirates, since hijacked PCs threaten the entire Windows ecosystem. http://news.techworld.com/security/3203037/microsoft-blocks-pirates-from-security-essentials-antivirus/

A nice option with the Win7 O/S disk is the Repair function on boot , I'v fixed three different computer boot problems just using the wizard .

Very nice , as one was XP the other two Vista setups . I'm impressed !

Why no updates ? That's how I usually check if I'm certified and you should really update the Security Patches at least . :)

There were a couple this week .

Haven't tried Windows 7 and I don't play games so I'm sticking with XP.

I could be wrong but I think that one day you'll make that change and you'll probably think: why didn't I make this move before?
