View Full Version : Peoples Accent's

well, lately, i have been reading different peoples posts and trying to do their accents at the same time (in my head of course :D)

i think it's probably since hearing illuminati on the radio the other night. now i cant read a single post of his without doing a liverpudlian one. i have also been reading some of our american friends in the same way, mainly cos i'm not too good at any others.

so, the question is, should i be worrying about whether my faculties are in order, (or whether i should get my head looked at for those who cant do a clever accent :D) - or does anyone else also do this ?

i have a fairly low, slangy, glaswegian accent if any of you care to try - tho' not of the "ochaye the noOo jimmy" sort <_< :D

previewing this, i suppose 'liverpudlian' and 'glaswegian' might sound strange if you've never been here or heard of them. so if you have a weird sounding name of an accent, let us know about that too :D

You're from Bradford?

Nah, only joking :P

I think in effect the UK is unique in that you won't experience so many accents in such a small area. I mean not that far from here you have a Manc accent (though pretty indistinctable to the untrained ear), you've got the Geordies further east, you have Birmingham down to the south and nearby to the north Preston & Blackpool.

Then you have the Scots, the Welsh, the Irish... I've let a non-English Brit sort them out ;)

I live in Washington DC, USA

Sometimes I have a slangish accent

instead of everybody
it's ery bai
instead of motherfucker
it's muh fucker
That's just when I'm with my friends out and about but since I work in corporate America and you leave that hood shit at home

I was born up in rural Aberdeenshire and raised in the Islands (Orkney) and Highlands (Oban). My colleagues, in their more genial moments, call me a Teuchter - which I can live with. :)

I have a relatively soft lilt compared to my erstwhile city dwelling compatriots.

B)

The accent thing in the UK is amazing - changes wildly from town to town. Once had a girl from Wolverhampton work for me. She was absolutely stunning and had an accent that could cut metal from 50 yards. I was torn between enjoying the radiance of her physical appearance and sunny personality and a desperate desire to wear ear defenders.

Glaswegian, born and bred. 76 years man and boy.

I don't believe I have a strong accent naturally. Tho' I can do it if I want.

Can you immitate a North American accent? Would it be easy or hard to do. Also, can you do Brooklin and "Southern" accents? Benny Hill did that pretty good.

Oh, and can you do "ebonics"? Or is that exactly the same in London? "The universal English Language".

@noname12: No, it is in the USA

-------------------------------------------------

----Now for something different.....
Okay, if you bit the tip of your tongue, as to draw blood. Or get it pierced. Then coat the roof of your mouth with peanut butter. Then try talking without touching your teeth with any parts of your tongue, at the same time, the back of your tongue is the only part allowed to touch the roof of the mouth while talking. Now you have a French accent.

[Just kidding here]

My accent has varied with the amount of practice I've had and the people I've been around, I did have kind of an RP accent a couple of years back, took a detour round GA (it comes more naturally than RP for swedes), and am now speaking a not so thick welsh-sounding accent (it isn't perfect though), intonation-wise, though I have no idea how it happened. I have never met anyone who sounded like the swedish chef, though I once saw some on TV, I believe they called themselves"Ace of Base" .

My vocabulary in speech is pretty much standard though, most colloquialisms I save for my writing.
