As soon as I saw that happen I knew the Cubs were doomed. No matter what happed with the fan how do you give up 8 runs at home, during one of the most important games in Cubs history?

That didn't cost them the game. 8 runs in the 8th inning cost them the game.

What inning was it when the fan messed up the game?

BigBank_Hank

I would hate to be that guy today. He will never be able to live that down if the Cubs don't make it to the World Series.

But what would you have done if you were in that situation? In the heat of the moment of an exciting game would you pass up an opportunity to catch a foul ball? If I was there I probably would have reacted the same way.

My thoughts exactly. It sucks that it happened, but can you really blame him?

 i blame him fully. i would have hit him in the head with the veer bottle instead of just pour it on him

Bottomline is the Cubs gave up 8 runs in the 8th inning.
1 out does not a ball game make.

Instead of telling us what you would do to him, why don't you say what you would have done in his situation.

The foul ball is hit, it heads right for you, this is your chance to catch a fly ball. Do you really think you would notice the guy 8 feet below you about to jump up and try to catch it to? If a ball is heading into the stands, everyone's eyes are on the ball, not the players.

If you still think that you wouldn't have done the same thing, then I guess you aren't as susceptable (SP?) to excitement as most people are.

There is also the safety issue, the ball was only a few feet in front of him, you would be mighty stupid to ignore a baseball that is heading straight for you, your instinct would keep you from paying antention to the players.

If you want to blame someone, blame the ref that said that it wasn't a fan interference. Nobody seems to be complaining about the call.

Oh, and I would still like to know what inning this happened in.

8th inning

kAb

god damn anybody who thinks it was the fan's fault is an idiot.

EVERYBODY would try to catch that ball, he just happened to be there.

Its a disgrace that anybody would blame the game on him.

do you really think you would not try to catch it?

Its not fan interference, it was a FOUL ball. Fair Game.

now stfu

The sad part is that the fan had to escorted out of the stadium with loads of security for his own safety.

I have been a baseball fan all my life and I have never gotten an opportunity to catch a foul ball. I would have done the same thing.

RPerry
10-15-2003, 05:05 PM
well said, this is not like what happened with the Yankees several years ago, the fan did not reach over the wall. I mean hell, I would love to blame a fan for Tampa Bays 4 qtr implosion against the Colts on someone too.... but the only people responsible is what is supposed to be the #1 defense in football choking.

;) Ok ok.I will admit...the fan had nothing to do with them giving up 8 Runs.

But look at what all the Marlins was saying after the Game.....

“ Mike Redmond turned to me and said, 'OK, let's make that kid famous.' ”

— Derrek Lee, Marlins 1B, on the play in which a fan interfered with Cubs LF Moises Alou

“ We'll be talking about that guy for a long time. We need to send that guy a box of chocolates. ”
— Mike Mordecai, Marlins infielder

:) And I love this one.....

"I see what people do for a baseball," Conine said. "They fall on their face. They drop their kids. They spill their beer. They'd do anything for a $10 baseball."

-Florida's Jeff Conine

:D Only in America will we drop our kids on their heads over what might sell for a couple hundred thousand. And I am an American so that gives me a right to Bitch on a Forum and to laugh as People Pour Beer all over this stupid Cub Fan! :P ..... :D

Meet Steve Bartman. He's the poor 26-year-old Chicago Cubs fan who last night got his hands on that foul ball headed for outfielder Moises Alou's mitt. Bartman, who attended the University of Notre Dame, works for a Chicago-area consulting firm and serves as coach for a local youth baseball program. We wanted to speak with Bartman about last night's incident, but he did not return messages left on his office voicemail. And when we dialed Bartman up at his apartment--about three miles from Wrigley Field--we got a recorded message saying that his number had been disconnected. Which is probably not a bad idea

i dont understand that reply.

If you would kick this guys ass for trying to get a foul ball, then obviously you've NEVER been to a baseball game. it is INSTINCT to go for that ball, you're looking UP not dow at the player

Alou, who felt he could have caught the ball against the wall, defended the fan, saying, ``I feel sorry for the guy. Every fan in every ball park goes for the ball.''

"I kind of feel bad for the guy. Every fan in every ballpark, the first reaction they have is they want a souvenir. They don't think about the outcome of the game or what could happen. Unfortunately, it happened. Hopefully, he won't have to regret it for the rest of his life."

Lifelong Cub fan here and two things are true:

1. It is instinct to catch the ball.
2. The Cubs blew it. Not a fan trying to catch a fuckin FOUL ball.

They blew it....tis be a sad day.

if fan interference is a problem then they need to make the fence higher.

im sure if this problem was serious enough the mlb association would do something to make sure it wouldnt happen again.

it isnt the fans fault !!!!!!!!

maybe if your shortstop had made the double play the 8 runs wouldn't have happened.

the 1 out if the foul ball had been caught out would not have made a difference.

Actually if you look at the image it obviously is. He even blocked the fielders mit. Although it's his fault I feel pretty bad for him, anyone else there would have gone for it as well, just look at all the people who were raising their arms for it, attempting to catch it. I can only see one person who was aware of what was going on. He has this look of horror on his face. (The guy to the left of the person the arrow is being pointed at)

http://www.thesmokinggun.com/graphics/art3/cubfan1.jpg

You really can't blame the poor guy though, a ball is headed towards you you don't have a lot of time to analyze all possible outcomes and what would possibly go wrong. You react and put your hands attempting to catch it, it's just natural instinct. Besides the guy couldn't even see the fielder, he had his eyes glued on the ball the entire time.

Nobody else would have thought about looking and down and checking to see if all was well. He's just the unlucky person who it went closest to. Now he has to most likely move, change his name, and start over. Cub fans will never forget this.
