What's the difference between what Kazaa's doing and what Napster did? Or course I'm talking about file sharing and why Napster's finished and Kazaa's doing the same thing as Napster did. (Or so it appears)

shawn Fanning started the whole concept of sharing mp3 files but he made a dumb mistake. Because Napster was set at the centre of the network - in other words, the index to the shared files was stored on a physical server within Napster HQ - it was easy for the authorties to shut down which was a big mistake and kazaa doesnt hold any files on a physical server!

1) Kazaa's still kicking :D
2) Kazaa is still free :)
3) Napster didn't have the add-ons and mods that Kazaa (at least K-Lite) has available now

To be serious though - The reason why Napster was shut down as because the service was centralised around one server; Once that got shut down, Napster was knackered.

Kazaa on the other hand takes a decentralised system - Basically, so many people act as supernodes (think mini-servers) where everyone else connects to (about 20 people per SN most times). Even if one or more were shut down, Kazaa would still work abeit with a few less servers.

That's the main difference - Hope that helped :)

Well why has Napster then opted to begin selling songs as opposed to the "Kazaa way" of doing things? If Fanning started the whole thing, you would think he'd still be fighting for it.(Or is he just trying to make a buck?)

The name Napster is now owned by another company (Roxio), who are trying to cash in on the Napster brand.

It has nothing to do with Shawn Fanning, or the original Napster.
