I've had Windows 7 on my computer for a few months now and I want to clean it up and optimize it. What program would you recommend for that?

Don't know what you'd want to optimize - run crap cleaner and call it good.

There are several software available for specific tasks, which can be described as optimizations.
Try Mydefrag for the HDD, and yamicsoft if you know what you're doing.
I'd also recommend using hijackthis, if you really know what you're doing.

hello!

one question... does all those so called optimization appz any real difference?

I tried to put some of them to use but nothing seems to really work or do something "special" =/

I always try to keep my computer well organized and I think that helps a lot already (just comparing to some friends with computer with better hardware that are "somehow" slower than mine).

btw, I wouldn't consider hijackthis as a software for optimization

I like Windows 7 Manager for system info and tools , very good program . I also use Classic Start Menu as I hate the Win7 start menu .

I use Tuneup , Ccleaner and Diskeeper to keep me running smooth .

Godmode is fun too , Clocker has a thread about it .

There are a couple of apps by IOBit software that are very good but the tune up utilities one is called Advanced System Care and includes spyware check, registry optimise, privacy clean /temp file clean and defrag & system optimization. I have run both CCleaner and AWC and personally think that AWC is the better app, it is another choice at least. The other program I use by IOBit is IS360 an anti malware app.

I use CCleaner for my Windows 7 box. All I really want to optimize is just the stuff CCleaner takes care of anyway.

If I really wanted to spend time doing more stuff, I'd use Perfect Disk to defrag the HD.

I must say that since I've installed Windows 7, all I've really used is CCleaner. I also have TuneUp Utilities installed, but (to me) that's much slower than CCleaner.

Me too. Wish there was a way to bring back the old XP Start Menu.

CCleaner for on the fly but I have been using Advanced SystemCare and my stuff is running great. I used the registry cleaner in ASC and followed up with ccleaner's and very rarely does ccleaner pick up anything after ASC did it's job. They both seem to have similar aggressiveness with their registry cleaning methods. ASC also has many other included tools including a scheduler for disk defragging and quick access to Windows tools.

I would recommend the Windows 7 install disk.

I will second using CCleaner for cleaning junk files from your system. As for defragging your hard drive, try JKDefrag. Both are free tools and can be easily located using Google. For antispyware/malware purposes, a couple of great tools that I typically use in the field are SuperAntiSpyware and Malware Antibytes, both which have free versions on their corresponding websites. If you are a Windows user, I also suggest utilizing Microsoft Security Essentials. This is also free if you own a genuine copy of Windows.

Whatever you do, don't use CleanMyPC Registry Cleaner to defrag the registry - it is a good registry cleaner but it ruins the registry if you use defrag on W7. I did this 2 days ago and it said it saved 56% space which I thought was alot & it turns out it was - after I rebooted it would not start up, it just keeps looping back to the start, shows the starting screen then a blue screen quickly flashes & after 2 loops it goes to the internal repair system which fails to fix the problem.
I was lucky to use the inbuilt backup utility that Win7 has - I advise to use this and schedule it. As most distributers do not ship with the Win7 disc I thought my 3mth old laptop was screwed, but luckily Win7 Repair Disc x64 is a great utility you can download which searched my HD for a backup image then reinstalled it which took about 3hrs but was only 1 day old so I was lucky not to loose anything important.

So remember to look after your system and use the inbuilt back utility. I also use the following-:
* TuneUp Util. 2010 (for optimizing, quick defrags etc)
* Advanced Defrag 4.2 (advanced defrag monthly)
* ThreatFire (picks up any threatening behavior or programs acting strange or altering which is great for malware detection - works with any AV too).
* CCleaner (for cleaning temp files and history)

Good Luck.
