I have a 80gb harddrive and I was only using 30gbs of it. Then I started downloading stuff off of suprnova over night that tottaled out to be 2 gb of disk space and I let it download over night. When I woke up it said my harddrive was full. I only had 535mb of disk space left. How could this be. I ran check disk and it didnt find any errors, does anybody have any idea?

Something's takin up all the space...use an app like SequoiaView or something to get a visual representation of file sizes on your
hard drive.
Or you could just do a search (Windows Key + F), All files & Folders, More Advanced Options, What size is it >
Specify Size > Search for files larger than 1GB (1048576 KB). It should be obvious when the search is done which large files are unwanted,
or if it doesn't find anything, try lowering the search filesize a bit.

I suggest you defrag your hard drive.

Triadcool

Thanks guy, this is realy frustrating so I am just going to reformat my computer. I guess ill talk to you guys when I get done. PEACE!

Triadcool
10-19-2003, 01:04 AM
O and before I go. I was talking to the guy that built my computer and he was talking about when you reformat your hard drive it just turns the space on your hard drive to 1 or 0, so it can be rewritten over the used space but it doesnt delete the stuff on the hard drive. He said the software he has would totally clear everything from ever being recovered again. Do you guys know a program that would do that?

muchspl2
10-19-2003, 01:08 AM
I can't belive you would just give up

but ther is a great program to wipe the free space called bestcrypt

People reformat way too often. Once a yr is OK. ;)

not knowing what kind of hard drive you have, you could just use a tool kit like the one Western Digital offers that can write zeros to the hard drive overwriting everything that was on there perminantly and also have other tools to test the hard drive and repair errors. This specific package is the DLG Diagnostic tools that can be downloaded under the diagnostics section from the link below.

torrent files show that they are taking up the amount it would when the file is finished. i.e if ur dl a 700mb dvd rip, even if u dl only 1mb it still shows up as 700. Perhaps windows picks up on that in some instances, but in others it thinks the files are actually full.

zapjb
10-19-2003, 12:27 PM
Good catch mogadishu! Bet that's it. People runaround here though & reformat at the drop of a hat.

Triadcool
10-19-2003, 02:39 PM
Well I know that wasn't the problem because I deleted the files that I downloaded off of suprnova before I formated and the problem was still there.

But now its not a porblem because I reformated anyways.

I know it's too late now, but looking at your picture I wish you would have expanded the Folder Name column. One entry says 'wasted space' and there's something else after it that you can't read. That might have provided a valuable clue to your problem. I suspect the drive was not formatted correctly in the first place. Partition Magic probably could have fixed it. Oh well, I guess we'll never know.

what does burst have to do with anything?
bittorrent allocates the file before you start the download, just how it works, nothing to do with burst

I know why it suddenly took up so much space on your HD and the problem is right in front of you!

http://www.uploadit.org/files/191003-untitled.JPG

Look at the center in the bottom of your screenshot where it says Cluster Size! You chose to format your drive with an insane cluster size of 4 MB! The higher the cluster size of the file system is, the higher is the amount of slack space on your HD!

This means if you have a file that is only 350 bytes in size, the file system will use the smallest cluster count, in your case 4 MB (4,096 KB) to save the file to the disk. The other space that is not taken up by the file is called slack space. So, if you save 4 small files (let's just say around 100 - 200 KB) it will actually take up 4 x 4 MB = 16 MB on your disk.

So, the only solution to fix this problem is to format the drive with a smaller cluster size. NTFS offers you the choice to format your clustters in multiple sizes, ranging from 4 KB to 4,096 KB. Best thing to do is format in the smallest possible cluster size or simply choose Default cluster size next time!

WOW Good catch maddog. Is there anyway to reduce the cluster size without reformating?

bittorrent is just a protocol....if u use latest BT version, it doesn include a neat downloader....but if you use BURST you dont have 700 megs when you start the torrent....but you have 0megs...and the file size grows as you download more...

this was an issue with BT before...its fixed in the latest version of it.... and burst was just an example of how to manage the torrent...

the only way that his clustersize could have eaten up so much space is if he had hundreds of thousands of tiny files i mean such a huge emount its very unlikely he would have them unless he archives news forums on his computer

BitTorrent allocates the space for your downloads before it downloads the files. I started to download Max Payne 2 from BitTorrent and it was going so slow (1kbs) so i stopped the download at 1% complete.

Then i looked at the folder it was downloading to and it said it was 1.5GB. thats the total size of both CDs for MP2.

When i deleted the MP2 folder i recovered my space.

i'm not familiar w/the prog ur using, but if u add up the "wasted space" column, it adds up 2 about 79 gig. y is the "wasted space" column so much more than the "occupied size" column? if u right click one of those folders in exploring (program files is a HUGE difference) and go 2 properties, how big does it say the directory is?

I had some similar experience which happened while capturing DV. The hard disk was used up by the temp files and the menory did not release even the file was deleted. The only way was to reform the disk. I deleted the partitions and rebuilt them (Low level format)

Poor.....
