I know I want an amd processer but I just can't seem to decide which proceser to get, throughbreads seem like they're going outdated in the next months and barton well hmmm can't really say much for barton

get a barton core if you can afford one

my original plan was the throughbread 2600+ but it's either barton 2500+ at 1.83ghz or 2800+ at 2.08ghz

2600+ throughbread $165 2.16ghz
2500+ barton $139 1.83ghz
2800+ barton $279 2.08ghz

So will the barton 2500+ befaster than the 2600+ throubread

the benchmarks are very similar for the 2500 and 2600, i'd go for the 2500 though...

I found this (http://www.thejemreport.com/articles/difference.php) site that explains the diferences to alot of things. I quoted the part about the XP cpu's

Palomino, Thoroughbred and Barton (the AMD cores):

The Palomino core was the original Athlon XP technology and is sometimes referred to as Model 6 of the Athlon series. The Palomino core was used for the Athlon XP1500 through the XP2100. It had 256k L2 cache, a 266mhz frontside bus, and .18 micron technology.

The Thoroughbred core (also called the Athlon Model 8) started at the XP2200, but later on it was made retroactive to the XP2100, XP2000, XP1800, XP1700, and XP1600. The XP2400 and XP2600 were added above the XP2200. These CPUs all have 256k L2 cache, a 266mhz frontside bus, and .13 micron technology.

A later revision of the Model 8 Thoroughbred brought two more processors using a 333mhz frontside bus: the XP2600 and the XP2700. The 266FSB XP2600 is not very common on the market and although AMD processors are performance rated, most people prefer the CPU with the faster frontside bus. The 266FSB XP2600 runs at a frequency of 2133mhz, and the 333FSB XP2600 runs at a frequency of 2087mhz -- both get the same performance according to AMD's mysterious benchmarking system.

The Barton core (Athlon Model 10) starts at the XP2500 and jumps up to the XP2800 and then the XP3000 (technically there is also a Barton core XP2600 at a frequency of 1917mhz, but it is all but invisible on the market). All three have 512k L2 cache, a 333mhz frontside bus, and .13 micron technology. The XP3200 has a 400mhz frontside bus but is otherwise the same as the other Barton core processors.

there are some nice benchmarks in this article (http://www6.tomshardware.com/cpu/20030513/athlon_xp-12.html), you can compare the two for yourself

hmm the fps is faster by a bit

so... that means

2500+barton is faster and cheaper than 2600+throughbread

i think they're speeds are fairly even - so go for the 2500

Get the Barton 2500+

In any case you won't see the difference unless you do a benchmark test between any of the above CPUs.

I agree. It is at the $85 price point. At that price you have to admit its a steal.

Watch out overclocking that. Check your CPU temps first, see if they are low, then decide. I would not overclock beyond the MHz of the XP 3000+ without much better cooling. You might end up with a dead CPU.

ALWAYS get your cpu retail vs oem! You pay $5 more for retail & get a stock HSF. But with retail you get a 3yr warr. With oem you ONLY get a 15-90 day warr.

Why overclock? It's going to be way faster than what you have now anyway.

That CPU can be had localy about $135 Canadian for Retail boxed version. So with the exchange, shipping etc. it's not worth it to get it from th US.

Get the Retail box version as you get a cooler and a 3 year warranty. The retail cooler also is good enough if you don't overclock (save yourself some more money). :)

I agree. Unless you are just a total geek like me, and spend time thinking of ways to molest (http://www.mcbriens.net/liam/img/smilies/w00tdribble.gif) hardware.

Who cares? For $5 you get a 3yr warr. That's the point.

In the summer time my apartment gets REDICULOUSLY hot
and the summer is when i use my pc most so... it's gonna fry

and saving $39 doesn't do me much good ;)

There is no such thing as oem in canada :P

If you overclock your CPU you will lose your warranty. For sure. If you plan on OC'ing your CPU, expect to ruin it unless you invest heavily in cooling.

It won't fry if you don't overclock it. Even if your place is hot.

There is oem in Canada.

Meh i'm not really in to overclocking unless my cpu can't meet game system requirements like uhhhh now.... but the p2 is locked
