I think the most important thing when asking for any kind of tech advice is what Skixo asked already, Whats the budget??

i would say max 150$ no more unless its worth it.I do like these but is there anything that would sound better than Creative GigaWorks T40 Series II 2.0 Multimedia Speaker System with BasXPort Technolgy or my second choice that looks good is Boston Acoustics Horizon MM226

Next question 2.0 ,2.1 or .5.1?

2.0 http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/StudiophileAV40.html

2.1 http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/speakers_audio/home_pc_speakers/devices/231&cl=ca,en

Don't really recommend 5.1 for computers.

I would recommend the Logitech X-540, I got their speakers for around £70 In the UK.
But whether It's the UK or the US, you get great sound, great quality and for the price you can't beat It

Well I'm sure they sound better in the USA.

If you want them "mainly for music" as you say, these will do you super-fine, and fit the budget as well.

If you got a stereo system then hook it up to that. You need the right cable for it. I get great sound from doing this.

The best way is of course to listen for yourself.I've got Klipsch on my home theatre and came within a breath of getting then for my computer but like here (http://reviews.cnet.com/pc-speakers/klipsch-promedia-2-1/4505-3179_7-9807237.html?tag=mncol;lst) I found the low end was somewhat lacking.Excellent speakers though.

What have you got for your AV setup, Idol?

I was a bit stuck for space, so I bought the RF-35 system (same as the RF-82, now).

Bass is not a problem, but nevertheless, I'm gonna pick up a pair SVS PC Ultras once I soften up Ms. J. a bit more.

I've also come to the conclusion a good home theater system can really only be properly evaluated with hardwood floors.

Carpeting basically sucks.

That sub with the ProMedia setup kicks ass, btw.

I was lucky to come into a very small inheritance when a neighbor/client passed away and since all my stuff was at least a decade old I treated myself to what I thought was the best within the funds available.

For receiver I looked primarily for how well it handled video more than audio hence the Pioneer.

For the TV in a relatively bright room (although seriously overpriced )nothing matched LED so the Samsung.

Samsung 46" Series 8000 260mMHZ LED HDTV (http://www.samsung.com/ca/consumer/tv-video/tv/led/UN46B8000XFXZA/index.idx?pagetype=prd_detail&returnurl=)

Pioneer Elite VSX-23TXH receiver

Nice!

I've always been partial to the Elite series...I don't think they get enough respect.

My flat-screen is a 40" atm; gonna shop 55"s as soon as tax season is tied-up.

Still need to decide on a Blu-ray - can't wrap my mind around buying a PS3 to get it; I'm not sure I want people saying, "Hey, I'll bring some games over!".

Thinking about changing out my old receiver, too, but.

Yeah I went back and forth on the blu-ray but after reading a lot of opinions and considering the cost would be more or less the same it seemed to make the most sense to get the PS3.Only downside is you have to purchase a separate remote and the PS3 remote is poorly laid out and not even backlit.
Of course if you are planning to go with a unified remote like one of the Logictech Harmonies then it isn't a factor.
That and the PS3 isn't as dead silent as a dedicated blu-ray player.

Btw I have found it to be true that the cheaper HDMI cables purchased through NewEgg do just as good a job as the Monster ones .Of course I have all the cables fairly neatly aligned if that makes any difference.
Also don't see any noticeable benefit to the 260 Hz.

Yeah, I've been on Newegg's HDMI cables for a while now; I've stocked about ten of them 'cuz they're cheap, and the ones I've got in use work flawlessly.

Can't figure how people are still conned into spending stupid money on the bloody things.

I appreciate your commentary re: the PS3 - I prefer silence, and, on the other hand, I really liked my sister's Harmony when I visited - money well-spent, I think.

I've also been looking at (or rather, Ms. J has been looking at) a line of flat-screens with nice specs and (reportedly) reliable wireless streaming performance into the bargain.

My PC is only about twenty feet away, with line-of-sight.

Thinking about that, too.

If you don't mind me asking which TV because the Samsung is suppose to too but they forget to mention that it requires an adapter which is all but impossible to find .
Also you probably are already aware but unlike sound equipment the worst way to judge TVs is in-store as they conditions are totally different .Also read from reputable sources that the buggers have even been known to adjust the models they are trying to rid themselves of to display the best pictures.

I believe it was this one-

I noticed there was a Samsung with similar capabilities, but the LG sticks in my mind.

Being a home theater junky myself, I can also recommend the harmony remotes. I went a bit nuts though & bought the top of the line (at the time) Harmony 1000i. This is fully touchscreen and program firmware is updated via PC-USB as well as updated remote model databases. Nice idea, the reality is that the button layout can be awkward with the need to scroll through an average of 6 screens sometimes (the max on one remote of mine is 14). In the end it is an expensive purchase that comes in handy when little hands make other remotes magically disappear because it is not intuitive to use. (my daughter is in the collecting phase we had to ring one of the cellphones yesterday to find it in one of her stash bags with many other items of interest).
I am actually thinking of retrograding the 1000i for a Harmony One after having a look at the functionality of that universal remote.

$100 budget speakers with a decent sub, and speakers with toggles for bass and treble. If you want to play your music really loud it will probably distort the bass levels, but they get the job done and imo the cheapest you can go while still getting the most important features.

Back on the original topic I have Logitech Z4 speakers and they don't disappoint. But to form your own opinion here is a review from CNET who I've always found to be brutally honest. (their review on the Samsung SB500 bluetooth headphones was a true classic with the reviewer saying he looked like princess leia with them on).

For decent sound quality I recommend M-audio the audiophile 2496 is an excellent little card it has RCA (phono) I/Os and spdif I/Os. I use mine for music production it makes creative labs stuff sound like a joke.
You can use the RCAs to connect to regular hifi amp or studio monitors if you prefer, or even use the spdif to connect to digital surround amp to get 5.1 sound. ;)

what about a headphone amplifier with USB input, and a nice set of headphones, will sound much better at a given price than the equivalent speaker package...but you may want to play music as you roam around the house...
