I'm thinking of making a new website for hosting games for cash prizes.

Like a halo 3 game with 8 people for a prize of $50 dollars for the winner.

You think I'll run into any legal problems with this or what?

The Halo brand is owned by Bungie Software Products Corporation which is owned by Microsoft . . . so there's that.

It's hard to gauge the legality of your project when its description is a little more than one sentence. What's the scope of your project besides a website that rewards money (which is another legal issue entirely) for multiplayer games?

Plenty of fan-made tournaments are hosted every day through many websites, local areas, even fundraisers with prizes in mind so I don't see any problem with it.

I would imagine there would be a huge number of legal issues associated with your idea, although it's a nice idea. I'd be up for a go if it was possible! :)

What do you mean 'host'?

eg. Host the game to your site or host on Live?

Host games on xbox live where people would compete..

I made the site already, but I have had little time to put into it since.

if so, only legal problem you might face is tax problems.

I knew people, who was the doing the same thing over cracked servers which are hosted by a Netherlands dedi. They had a great system, we was playing CS over them, we had a account system which money flowed on. At the end of the month, we was getting paid. The rental money of dedicated server automatically shared equally to every user.

Let me explain this in a real situation, lets say a call of duty tournament.

You must pay $5 dollars to enter and their is 12 spots.
12*5 = $60

The winner gets $50 and the person in second place gets $5 dollars back.

Just an example.

as long as u are only the sever that's hosting the game then its 100% legit
