A site died all for the sake of $40???

Who exactly was running it? And why would you run a site if you couldn't provide your own server fees... relying on donations maybe isn't the best way to go about things, they're never guaranteed...

I've never even heard of SqN... who were they and what did they offer?

$40..... If you own a BT site I think you should be able to pay off $40 in case of a low donation month or something.

He should have made announcements that he couldn't pay for it way before he missed the payment. It is fully the owners fault for letting the site get that far ran down.

Totally agree, and it's ok to make mistakes, just as long as they don't happen again kinda thing...

If they're 16-ish and kids like has been mentioned then I'm sure they'll be back with something else... maybe when the pocket money rises in line with inflation :P (j/k)

I thought they did?

Anyways, I'm not in the least bit surprised.

It goes to show how much a new tracker that focuses solely on exclusivity and leetness rather than developing a large core userbase can survive in this world.

So much for a "community" tracker eh? Where was their "community" when the tracker needed it the most?

Rart I was under the impression that he didn't make an announcement due to the surprised reaction of members in the chat log posted.
He obviously didn't make it known that he was in the hole for last months payment as members were completely surprised when it got shutdown.

I am not a member of the site (or wasn't.. past tense), so I can't confirm anything.

If it were me, I would have made up a lie. I would have told people it was because the RIAA was hounding me, or something along those lines. Definitely would not have made it known that the closure was due to me not having a few measly dollars in my pocket.

How embarrassing for the owner...

We never hated SqN,I personally dint like the way they went running their tracker. They wanted to be a "community tracker" and went on to recruit members from a BT community forum :P.
I still wouldn't waste my time and efforts on a tracker that's has very little scope of surviving.

I never did join, though, since I heard it was a tracker with all kinds of music, but in reality it was mostly trance and its variations (don't know the names, sorry).

My conclusion: trance maniacs are poor.

This is the reason I never joined either. Most new music trackers are FULL of nothing but mainly electronic music. I guess it's because they take their releases straight from the scene.

Rart

...and that's what Demonoid/Soulseek/Public trackers are for. It really does not take that long to download an mp3 file, you don't need the "best" speeds associated with a private tracker (although with such a small userbase, finding decent speeds may be even rarer on a site like SqN).

They are really easy to seed provided you are in the habit of seeding for a good couple of weeks after grabbing torrents.

How does having jobs/family/kids justify not even having 100$? It's not like they made the tracker and all of a sudden they were required to pay a bill. They knew what they were getting into when they made the tracker, they knew the responsibility they were taking, and they clearly knew that the cheaper the hosting, the more possible for them to handle the costs. When a tracker nearly dies because grown adults cannot scramble 100$ even when they all pitch in, something's wrong.

Either that, or they themselves aren't sure if the tracker will remain alive, so none of them wanted to invest in the tracker. They simply wanted the users to maintain it for them.

Disagree. Ratioless music sites = expected fail.
The concept of long retention and massive user uploads only works due to the seeding difficulty. When you remove that out of the equation, there goes the content.

Haha, you must not be a member or you just don't get the purpose of our site (i.e. Coexist). We never intended on indexing scene releases. 95% of scene music releases are spam or V2 trance shit. If that floats your boat then more power to you, but it is not what we had in mind when we formed CE.

We built the tracker based on the idea of having a small group of members sharing the albums they enjoyed so others could try it out and possibly discover some cool new music. Go take a look at the browse page at sqn (if it's still open) and tell me what percentage is within the Electronica genre. Also, what percentage is V2.

Coexist has been online for just under a year and is presently at 1297 members. During that time 4964 albums have been uploaded (90% of which are non-scene releases). Presently, there are 2946 active torrents on the browse page. Of the 5,000 torrents that have been uploaded to CE only 959 were V2. We have had 1426 V0 uploads, 764 flac, 941 320 kbs.

There have been 9766 forum posts, which means that, on average, there are 26.75 forum posts per day.

Finally, I must mention our irc. If you are a member of Coexist, I would suggest you try out our irc channel. Our irc channel exemplifies the tight-knit community of music lovers that embodies the purpose behind CE.

Btw, if the above is perceived as blasting Sqn, then I apologize in advance. The staffers of sqn are also members of CE (even though they have never invited me to their tracker :whistling) and I mean no ill will and wish them all the best.

So true. And judging by the many reviews that I've seen of Sqn, it looks like this is what the site is full of(not to mention most new music sites). Of course I could be wrong since I'm not a member and don't plan on being one...

I assume he meant 10% of his uploads are random scene rips of electronic/trance promo dj singles? Assuming he used the word in context with rajincajun77's post.

IMO this type of uploading is worth less than not doing it at all. It's a 'flaw' of auto-uploading bots, unless, of course, you are a trance aficionado, or a dj.

PancakeWaffles
02-26-2010, 04:00 AM
Because the spam I do upload is things I personally like. Also nothing wrong with simply more content, sure it's not A+ content but it's good content none the less.

1000possibleclaws
02-26-2010, 04:21 AM
What is there to love with a few remixes and radio edits? I'd think it a bit overambitious to upload that kind of stuff unless you already upped the specific albums first and got good feedback from that. You don't even see that stuff make it on What.cd for the most part.

PancakeWaffles
02-26-2010, 04:50 AM
Well when I am referring to spam I am mostly referring to singles and bootlegs, only time I upload singles is if it's a song that I like, and I upload bootlegs depending on simply what it contains, sometime they will have unique content at the time so it's worth uploading.

Also that shouldn't all fit on one sentence but too lazy to fix.

1000possibleclaws
02-26-2010, 02:42 PM
Bootlegs are amazing. Check out EZTorrents(dimeadozen) of you want good flac soundbounds, probably mostly for rock type bands. It's the best source I've found yet. ZOMB-tracker is decent as well, and has some stuff that isn't on EZTorrents, vice versa.
