i setup a http webserver at home and then used cgiproxy (http://www.jmarshall.com/tools/cgiproxy/). it worked very well at getting around the blocks my school put on hotmail and a few other chat rooms people always used there.

of course there are free proxies already out there so you could try a few of them.
