I have been looking for a long time for the best way to get a single mp3 since I gave up on Ares. I have tried several things, BUT by far the best solution I have found is: Grooveshark.com + Orbit Downloader

Check it out for yourselves!

SmartSniff can also work if you dump the traffic as a .dat file and remove the HTTP overhead :P

There was an incredible website for getting almost any mp3. I could always find everything with it, preview the songs before i downloaded them, and it even listed the quality too. Then i forgot the name and address of the site. I had it bookmarked on my other computer before it bit the dust. The name started with an N i believe. It was relatively new; i mean it had not been around for years.

I know there's plenty of other good options for downloading single songs, but that website was one of my favorites.

Personally if its just random single tracks I find that dc++ is without doubt the most effective program. There is to this day not a song that I didnt find there when searching for it, hell I even found tunes made by friends that they never officially released (lol).

If you are looking for an album you can often find most simply by googeling. Usually you will find a page with rapidshare links. Myself I download most music via torrents, basicly because I see the releases there. But for single tracks dc++ Only thing important is off course that you need to stay in the right hubs too, cant just expect to find it all in just one. But if you connect to some good hubs, specially if they are specialized in your music genre, you should be able to find what you need.

Freaking selective downloading duh! ¬¬ I hate n00bs who say that limewire/frostwire is best for single songs when ultimately Gnutella will be full of spam etc. Just freaking download the album with BitTorrent but select what files not to download. If you're torrent client doesn't have this feature then die.

I thought the same when I discovered it two years ago, but look at that, it's still standing. There are many other music streaming services out there, anyway (although I've found Grooveshark to be the best in terms of content and usability).

I've even disabled my ad blocker for GS - they provide an awesome service and bandwidth isn't free, so they can really use the revenue from those unobtrusive Google text ads.

I've started using GS more and more. Wasn't a big fan of it at first, but the service has grown and it really is excellent. One of the few services that works abroad when I'm working. I just wish Spotify worked everywhere and the same goes for Last.FM/Pandora. Anyone know of any other music streaming services that work internationally/globally?

Skiz, you can download a track within 5 seconds and I've found everything I've looked for, it's just that good.

Hiccup, the site get the trackers from other sites, for example vkontakte.ru. As you can see on the picture, it's possible to sort the tracks by Bitrate. I have only downloaded ~ 15 trackers, all of them were found in 320 kbit/s. I think it's like a really simple, easier, faster, smarter program than for example LimeWire, SoulSeek or Bearshare.

By the way, just like Skizo, I wasn't aware this program existed until yesterday, also. Looks like I missed the original post where it was mentioned. regarding Mulve:

If Mulve gets all its files from a single server location (vkontakte.ru) the record industry won't have a very hard time snuffing it out. Maybe the only reason it's still alive is because they have too many other battles going on right now.

After the rash of spyware-infested P2P software that came like a plague after the shutdown of Napster, I think that many of us might not be eager to jump headfirst into installing another application until we know a little more about it.

I've got to wonder why they made this into a oldschool software client, instead of setting up a flash-enabled web frontend, like it seems just about everyone else is doing these days.

I concur. That's part of the reason why I was/am so hesitant to try it out. Had a friend try it out, though. It's kind of like a program based hypem/elbow/etc. It found several obscure tracks, which I thought was cool, but the quality seems to be mostly on the 128 side, if you don't mind that sort of thing. I'd only pop this thing out if I couldn't find something elsewhere and had exhausted all other alternatives/options (i.e. Google, SoulSeek, torrents, etc.)

I suggest you look up the history of AllOfMP3, the Russian MP3 download site that thought they were untouchable because they were in compliance with Russian law -- despite being at the very top of the record industry's (s)hit list.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AllOfMP3

Killing off Mulve should be a lot easier than killing off AllOfMP3, which required an intense international effort approaching the level of the D-Day invasion or the Manhattan Project. Mulve can survive only as long as they stay "under the radar" :)

Hey, thanks for the link, I wasn't aware of that. However, as far as I can see, AllOfMP3 sold music tracks, while Mulve lets you download them for free. Isn't the former case, i.e. "profiting from piracy", a way more serious offense for the RIAA and such?

Private trackers are just as safe as public trackers, as soon as they (Riaa / Mpaa) get in then the they'll monitor the site and its done for, basically its about 50/50 chance of getting caught. Filesharing private trackers have all the stats / ip's/ user info logged so basically you can bet that if that site gets taken down the users would be offected aswell (most of the time they just go after admin though)

Not all of them. Some don't keep IPs, either because they don't want to or the source code they run on doesn't have that capability.

Since you appear to be quite worried about data logging, then consider being banned from What.cd a favor. They even log your daily ratio stats.

Mulve didn't really die. All those servers full of MP3s are still there, waiting to be leeched. :)

Mulve was just a frontend that connected to the Russian social networking site called Vkontakte. You can join the site directly at http://vk.com and use the MP3 sharing features.

I recently joined and uploaded a few MP3s to the site. It's a little tedious doing it one MP3 at a time (hopefully there's a shortcut) but at least there are now a few more titles that are not in Russian.

Mulve didn't really die. All those servers full of MP3s are still there, waiting to be leeched. :)

True, there are two alternative clients born from its ashes already:

I've been using DC++ for years now. Lots of good public hubs with singles. Plus the speeds are awesome.

May want to try creating your own VKontakte account and using that in the authentication settings. Or use the app I posted above if that's too much of a hassle.

Yes BKontakte is the east-european version of Facebook that lets you upload and search for music files.

This must be the worst thread I've seen.
Everytime I check the forums front page I get this:

I've found stuff on Grooveshark that wasn't on VK. That doesn't mean GS's database is better or even larger (there are many dupes of popular songs) though, just my experience.

And yesterday I found that a pretty well-known song surprisingly wasn't on GS. Had to take the time to upload the whole album myself. :)

It's now flawless as it works on my desktop PC but not my netbook. The .NET Framework never carried on well with MicroXP...

May want to try a full cleanup and reinstall of all the .NET Framework versions. That could help.

If you google "ftp search engine" and find a nice one (I use NAPALM FTP Indexer most of the time) you can find stuff on other peoples servers. It seems a much safer way to me than signing up to a music site that may get busted. NAPALM has mostly Russian links but the songs are in English so no biggy. What I usually do is search a line from a song I do not know on google to find the artist and song name and if I search the name on the ftp I will find individual songs of various sizes (search artist for entire album listings). Of course the larger MP3's are higher bit rates and there is also Flac. Not all of the sites will allow a direct download but 90% of the time I can get it with Filezilla or Flashget if I can't do direct. Filezilla is really neat once you find an FTP, since you can look thru the entire server for goodies. Just watch the Russian sites, their movies might have Russian audio or the moron who talks over the English track and ruins it. Often Games will be Russian only too, but the good listers will indicate it in the titles. The sites can be slow or fast, there's no telling til you try.

No Russian for me, especially though P2P. They now computers than most and use those sites to get into yours....JMO But just like Tim Wilson says....."I Could Be Wrong" !
