I thought the PS3 could be modded like most of the other systems.

I'm in the market for a PS3 right now and was doing some game research before I bought one, but I've been surprised at the lack of any games at all. Most sites have a PS3 section but the sections are empty. Even our own NZB section has no PS3 games (http://filesharingtalk.com/vb3/nzb-index/games/ps3/).

So, is the PS3 mod-able?

AFAIK, no.

Some people have claimed to make a couple supposed "breakthroughs" in regard to hacking the PS3, but it has mostly amounted to nothing.

I don't own a PS3, so I may be mistaken, but I think one thing they can do though is mod it to play PS2 backups. That's pretty much it though.

Skiz the ps3 cannot be modded by the everyday person as of today (There were some claims, that have no credibility but that is beside that fact)

Also there is backups of ps3 games on some trackers just for backup purposes, incase their is a breakthrough in the future.

This seems to be the most credible source. Apparently it is the same guy who hacked the iphone...http://geohotps3.blogspot.com/

Still a ways off it seems. Not sure if I would dl too many games at ~50GB each. It would be nice to have some more power for linux applications and media playing capabilities, though.

Assuming that one could put them on a hard drive much like you can put games on the PS3 hard drive, I would just buy an external 2 TB drive for $150 and download everything I ever wanted.

That ends up equaling 10 seasons of dvd rips per game downloaded. I have a limit of 250GB per month, so I don't think it would be worthwhile for me. That might change as bandwidth increases. Who knows...

And if anyone else feels it is worthwhile for their situation, then I think it is great that option is coming.

Just curious, do games actually use up the entire 25 GB (50 GB? Does PS3 use dual layer?) of space on the blu ray? I'm under the assumption that most games in their current state would not use up that much space, and (if) the PS3 was hacked most games could easily be scrubbed to remove the junk data. In that case, I don't see how the sizes would be that different from that of the 360, seeing as there aren't astronomical differences between the two system's games.

That is what I have seen in other discussions like this.Would be interesting if someone had more concrete info.

uh sorry thats a gamecube chip they are showing off on a ps3 page.

from what i know there is only one chip that will let you access the firmware on a ps3 and thats an infectus chip. Still wont let you do much though, so........ stick to an xbox or a wii imo.
