High-rise raunchiness beats watching fast cars for some.
GOLD COAST, AUSTRALIA
It's a bird! It's a plane! No, it's the raunchy high-rise post-race action at the Lexmark Indy 300 that has the crowd peering skywards.
As many as 300,000 will pay to see the V8 Supercars and Champ Cars hug the curves of the tourist strip this weekend but when the pits are closed eyes and binoculars turn upward to the bawdy sideshows under way on scores of balconies.
When the sun goes down Surfer's Paradise becomes perverts paradise in the name ofmotor racing.
With fully charged tanks of testosterone and a few beers under their belts, packs
of men hang off the verandas chanting at the skimpily dressed girls opposite to
reveal all.
"It wouldn't be the Lexmark Indy 300 without the good looking girls on the track and in the buildings. Motor sport has always had sex appeal," offered event boss James Ashcroft.
"They have their own carnival in the hotel balconies with the girls up there with
their kit and clobber coming off and all that stuff. It's part of the weekend.
While we don't condone it there's nothing we can do about it."
While family attractions are a big part of the Indy 300, some of the after-race
action is rated over-18's only.
The high-rise festival is a big part of Indy, according to Jess Ansell who is
spending the weekend in an apartment on the back straight.
"Anything can happen," she said, hanging over a balcony in her bikini top.
